View Full Version : Anyone interested in another HID group buy
patroa1

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by one of our forum members (blkhwk34) and told Fashtek would do another group buy in May and would I check into it since I was the one who set up the previous one.
So I contacted Fashtek, and yes this is true, he would definitely like to do another group buy. The price this time is $75 for bike kit and $150 for car kit, and yes you can mix and match for HI and Low beam.
Right now he is restocking his supply, seems we pretty much depleted it last time, but he would like to know how many are interested. So if you did not take advantage of the last one and are interested please start a list (add name and cut and paste). Once I have a list I will finalise details.
Also he has 50 watt HID's and I'm checking on the price for those also.

Yes, anything close to 4200k will give a nice white light. Going higher will start to turn the light blue and less will start to turn yellow. YMMV

Thought I better let everyone know the status of the group buy. As of last nite http://www.fashtek.com (http://www.fashtek.com/) was about 2 weeks away from having his supply of units restocked. So we have 2 options we can wait until he has enough units to ship without delay or you can elect to order now with the knowledge that the units will not ship for at least 2 weeks.
So here are the details of the group buy.
Price: $75 for bike kit, $150 for car kit
How to order:
1.) Just copy and paste this to Pay-Pal sales@fashtek.com (sales@fashtek.com)
2.) Include a confirmation e-mail with Pay-Pal stating which unit you are
buying, ie. h-7 4300k etc
3.) Be sure to mention bmwlt.com group buy also.
So if you want to order now and wait till he has units in stock aprox. 2 weeks, feel free or you can wait and order after he tells me he has received units from his supplier. Your choice.
Skip, thanks for making the list.

Dave, during last group buy I know they sent at least one unit to Europe shipping was $20 extra, not sure if you have to worry about customs, VAT etc. but if need it just mailed to you in plain brown wrapper I'm sure I could work something out for you. Let me know by PM.

Paul, you are on the list. You might go ahead and order lights now. Get the 4300k in the bulbs that fit your bike. Low beam is H-7, not sure what your high beam is. If it is H-9 then a H-11 will work. Install should take not more than an hour depending on where you put ballasts.

Whats the general concensus on colour temp for the bulbs. Saw 4300k recommended in this thread, and 5000k recommended in an earlier group buy thread.
Don't want to go blueish, but in my work (film) 5000k is roughly daylight colour temp, and is what I consider "white".
Anyone know off top of their head what the colour temp of the halogens are?
patroa1
May 21st, 2007, 7:37 am
Chris, Halogens are 3200k, 4300k is white, the higher the color temp. the more blue the light and the less usable light.
4300k is blue only on ignition then turns bright white, the 5000k have a slight bluish tint after they reach full power.

The recommendation for 5000k was probably linked to the CQ Light buy as they do not offer 4300k. 5000k is the lowest temp they carry.
Go with 4300k if it is available. I had it on my 99 LT (from hid-online, but at $300.00) and loved it. I now have 5000k on both my 03 and 05 LTs (from CQ Light) and it does have a blueish tint.

Mark, that is the info I received from Fashtek also. It seems that Us Customs has been slow to clear his resupply from his supplier.:(
I believe if you read post #18 in this thread you will see that Fashtek informed me that it would be at least to 2 weeks before he had enough units to fill all orders. I assure you Fashtek will deliver your HID units as soon as he can, sometimes things happen beyond our control, but they have never failed to deliever.

A side note...
I installed the ballast in the left hand side panel where I believe the ride adjust lives. It seemed just too congested in the nose cone and after taking the left side panel off, there was all this space...:bmw: . Plenty of room for the install and enough slack in the connections. I attached the ballst with super duty velcro to the frame.

Received my stuff from Fashtek today. I was going to do the install on my days off which dont start till Sunday morning, but I woke up early today and opened the front door and there it was. I brought it in and opened the box and looked at the contents, looked at the clock and said screw it I have time. Took about an hour, I don't have a step drill so I used my trusty rotozip after using a 3/4 inch wood bit to make a hole. I have not messed with the adjustment knob yet, Cant wait till I can ride it in the dark.

Got my H7 last week, opened the box tonight. Holy Cow! Ballast? Naw, it's an anchor! And with the rain we are having, and the boat that the storm washed down into my back yard.....I might need the anchor! I installed the H4 a few weeks ago and the ballast was only a third as large. It did have two pieces though (starter?) Any way, I figured if the low beam was that good, I just had to have the high beam too!

Would someone mind posting a scan (pdf, whatever) of the HID installation instructions that came with the Fashtek kits? (I'm hoping TonyK can get them to me, but this is just in case they dont arrive today via mail or email)
Planning to install this weekend,
Low Beam - H7 4300K
High Beam - H11 4300K
but the install paperwork hasn't turned up (shipped seperate from the kit... for import reasons).
Think I've got most of the Motolight instructions off the Motolights website (caliper mount), unless there's any extra pics/wiring setups specifically for the LT that aren't on the web page??
Any assistance welcome... (and yes, I've been back through most of the threads and how-to pages and printed what I could find!)

Thanks Patrick for organising this, Tony K for shipping, and Jack for your time!. Got mine installed and expect I'll be very happy with the outcome (will ride home in dark tonight..!) :bmw:
A couple of points about my install, (HID's & Motolights) in case they might prove helpful to anyone else.
I stripped the bike down and removed nose cone, which made it easier to install everything, plus feed power (and a direct new earth wire, just for the hell of it) to the front of the bike for the Motolights. Kept all the other wiring at the front.
Installed the 2 x HID ballasts on top of the low beam light casing, with padding. I used the 2 x holding frames supplied and screwed the frames together, and tied in with plastic ties so the 2 ballasts are very secure.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p196/cws127/K1200LT%20HID_Motolights%20install%20sml/HID_ballasts_lights_installed.jpg
Putting the low beam (H7) bulb in was a no-brainer, cut the 1" hole as recommended by Joe, and all worked out fine.
With the high beam (H11) I'd read the comments of others about not fitting, and looked closely at the plastic tabs. The flatter top tab is fine, but the 2 lower angled tabs are a little too long, and too wide at the bottom edge. I used a fine Dremel tip to cut down these 2 edges until the bulb could fit snugly into the socket like the original halogen. No need to hot glue or use any tape or adhesive.
I tapped into the original low beam wiring to power the Motolights relay, and installed the on/off switch next to the low beam adjuster.

Good news guys, I just talked to Fashtek and he is extending the group buy till the end of summer. :D
So if you haven't order yet you still have till summers end ..... but why wait, it's the best $75 you'll ever spend.

Hi
I'm a little confused about what I would need to order. I have a 2001 LT, with H7 low beam, H3 high beam. If I want high beam only, I order 1 kit-H3, and if I want both high/low, I would need to order 2 kits, one for each high/low?
I'm also a bit undecided about going the HID way, or going the 'headlight modulator' way. Most roads I travel regularly have enough lighting, or enough other vehicles to provide light.

Bob, I would go with the HID low beam and the headlight modulator on the stock high beam. Thats how I set mine up and am very happy with the results.:D
The h-7 low beam HID is very bright and really lights the road and is very conspicuous in the daytime, had a couple of HD riders ask me yesterday when I stopped for fuel if I was runnning aircraft landing lights because the low beam was so bright, even the wife was impressed by how well it lights the road after dark. So IMHO it's HID low beam and headlight modulator on stock highbeam.

So IMHO it's HID low beam and headlight modulator on stock highbeam.Because the HID low beam is so bright and WHITE it is sometimes NOT visible during daytime on a sunny day. I witnessed it while riding with a gold LT from TX a few weeks ago. His bright HID low beam was supplemented by a set of yellow Motolites and these added great conspicuity. I could very easily see him when he was riding behind me in daytime.
I just added a set of PIAAs under the cowl and they are yellower than the bright HID, also giving me conspicuity. I went with 7 other bikes on a ride yesterday and was riding sweep. The lead rider could easily spot me from his position.
While I agree that a HID low beam is the best investment you could make on your bike, I would also suggest auxiliary lighting for added conspicuity during daytime, or use a high beam (halogen, hence yellower light) modulator. Night time is NO issue!;)

I bought from them during the last group buy. Quick service, prompt refund od the difference between the group price and what I had initially paid and a great product. I installed both, high and low and greatly recommed doing it. Not much extra work while you at it and the high beam is amazing!

I would like high beam.
After a scary drive back from France tonight.....
I will have a H3 version please, assuming no problem with UK despatch? At $75 it can't be turned down, especially with such a good exchange rate.
