View Full Version : Permanently mounting a radio to the R12RT fairing

While discussing my new motorcycle options, I've thought about what permanent mounting options I'd have for a radio on the R12RT. What if I didn't get the stock radio, or even the prep kit. Could I install my own, better, cheaper?

Rather than mounting a unit on the bars, I think it'd look cleaner to mount a radio on the fairing. Is it feasible to get a marine radio with a wired remote, mount the radio body under the bike somewhere, and mount the remote permanently to the fairing. Has anyone tried this?

I went throught the same decision, only there is more motivation with the older 1150 to not go with BMW's stuff. They only have a tape deck and it costs over $1000 to install. That's with the speakers, antena and wiring already there.

I had a local stereo shop (very good one called Matrix Audio in Torrance, CA) install a custom stereo.

The stereo consists of high end speakers (trashed the stock ones), an amp, volume knob on the dash and an XM receiver. No deck needed. It looks great, sounds great and cost less than half the cost of a factory unit.

The amp is in the glove box, leaving about half of it usable. The BMW deck uses the whole glove box.

Uploading pictures seams to be beyond me, send me a PM if you like and I will send you some pictures of it.
