I don't understand how that's a record. I guess the key words in that article are "partially streamlined, naturally aspirated motorcycle class". Because I can name a host of stock sportbikes that have gone faster than 176.789 mph at the Salt Flats. The ZX-11, the ZX-12R, and the Hyabusa to name 3 right off the top of my head. Soon to be added is the new ZX-14 coming out in a few months.

Bonneville is all about class. They've gone well over 300 mph with a two-wheeled vehicle (I hesitate to use the term motorcycle for those rocket-shaped constructions), so they've gotta split the rest of the field into reasonable classes so they can compare and compete against like vehicles. There's even a record of 75 mph for a 50cc bike that's been pretty hard to beat in that class. Believe me, those guys take it pretty seriously no matter what class they're running in.

I'm most impressed by the 2 up run of 164...hummm, wonder how many of our usual passengers would hang on for that ride!

During a recent track day, I did get passed by a sport bike riding two-up. That was amusing. Even two-up I bet they weighed less than me and the LT.
