What are you guys using for oil in the LT? I'm curious about dino vs. synthetic, but more so the weight for our climate.
I have four jugs of 10-40 which were intended for a Honda; not sure whether to toss'em.

I use Castrol Grand Prix 4 stroke motorcycle oil 20W-50, a petroleum oil. It is the same as that used by my local BMW dealer. (about 250 miles away) The dealer claims it is the only oil recommended by BMW Canada. I do my own oil and filter changes every 6000 km. This is more convenient to me and the price is much better. I always keep a couple of OEM filters on hand and presently have about 18 litres of oil that cost me about 3.29 ea.

Castrol Grand Prix 20W50 is the oil recommended. I'm switching over to Amsoil 20W50 on my next oil change. The only thing is when switching :bmw: to synthetic is that you have at least 25K/km on yor bike. The dealer tells me that it takes about that many K's in order for your rings to seat properly in your engine.

Thanks, folks. I'll stock up.

Part of the fun of getting a bike from a re-seller; sort of a dealer but not Beemer. Bike has 25k (miles) on it. No owner's manual, no tool kit, no filter wrench, but worse - NO idea what's been done to poor Helga. 25K service? Dunno. I'll start with the simple stuff, like a fluid changes. Have to do it myself - the dearest dealer is two hours in either direction from me. Not sure if local Honda et al can work on our bikes, at least as some basics go.

I'm taking mine in to Budds BMW this friday for the 36,000 mile inspection. I'll let you know what they use.

Had Budds BMW in Oakville do the 60,000 km inspection last Friday. Their head bike technician says to use only Castrol 20W 50 Non Synthetic oil in the engine. The transmission and rear end fliuds were replaced with synthetic.

A bit of a shock to the wallet; the inspection, spark plugs, air, oil and fuel filters, some other small parts, a new rear tire and a new gel battery brought the bill to just over $1700.00. I am going to re-learn the art of motorcycle maintenance or as the CFO has suggested, get a part time job flipping burgers!

Had my 40K service done at Atlantic Motorplex in Moncton. Trailered the bike down with all the tupperware off. I repaced the fuel filter, air filter, antifreeze, spark plugs myself. Had them service my ABS brakes which were not working, check my valve clearances, change my rear tire, replace rear brake pads, change transmission oil/rear end oil and do whatever else the service required. Total bill came to just over $800.00 including parts and materials. You can save yourself 2hrs labor just taking the plastic off yourself. Mind your their service rates are $60/hr ;)

Budds' labour rates are $90/hr for bikes and $115/hr for cars. But they have fresh coffee and vibrating, massaging lounge chairs to reduce the shock when you receive the bill :D

$60.00 is a great price! Blackfoot Motorsports in Calgary is charging $98.00 per hour labour rate. I just had my 1000Km service done and the bill was $323.47 tax in.

Budd's doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. When I was shopping for an LT, in the *winter!*, they had a 2000 LT and wanted 16 freaking thousand for it. Duh! Of course that included 400+ admin or some such.
They probably figure that if one wants to play in the big leagues, one shouldn't worry about prices. Or something.

Budds didn't impress me any either. I was there a couple of years ago visiting my daughter and decided to visit their show room. I was wearing an old pair of cut offs and sandals. No one wud even talk to me or offer any help looking at bikes until I told them I owned an LT. :bmw:
