View Full Version : Woohoo!! First ride! Clutch leak @ grip??

Finally went riding today! Bought the bike in January and this was the first ride. 50-60 miles, nervous as hell... But after 24 years since my last bike, surviving is good enough. Some gravel, some highway (awesome!!!) and some town. Mostly one handed, as so many people were out that the hand was waving the whole time. Lots of oggles everywhere.

I'm getting droplets of what has to be clutch fluid, right at the left handgrip somewhere. Can't pinpoint it. Anyone run into this? Searched the forum with no luck.

open the clutch reservoir and reseat the gasket, tighten the screws and check again. watch that you don't drip brake fluid on the paint...

+1. That "clutch fluid" is DOT4 brake fluid. You want to clean if off all painted surfaces with soap and water. Before removing the top of the clutch reservoir cover (it has 4 philips head screws on top), turn your wheel full right and take a look at the plastic circle on the inboard side of the reservoir. The fluid line should be about centered in that circle. If it is a bit low, no problem for the moment, but if it is high some of that brake fluid may want to spill out of the reservoir when you take off the cover. Put a towel or something absorbent around the reservoir below the point where the cover comes down on the reservoir so that if there is spillage you will not have it dripping on paint work. Then take the cover off. On the underside of the cover there is a seal just inside of the cover lip, and a funny little bellows thingy hanging down from the seal. Make sure the seal is in place and not damaged. The bellows thingy has two sides that should fold inward, toward each other. If the bellows thingy looks like it has a "wing" on one side or the other (or both), pinch the wings back into the center of the bellows. Then reassemble, and make sure the screws are tight. If the leak is not coming from the cover you will have to begin thinking about the possibility of a master cylinder leak or a banjo bolt leak, but these would be unusual.

Thanks guys...
Popped the cover carefully. The bellows were just a-bellowing; both sides winged outwards. Pushed them back in; now we shall see. Hopefully that will do it; if not, I may be backatcha asking just what the heck a banjo-bolt is.
