Russel Seat – Five Stars!

I finally received my Russell Day-Long seat. I now have about 600 miles on it. How good is this seat?

In a word… WONDERFUL, MAGNIFICANT, SURPURB, BREATHTAKING, AMAZING, ASTONISHING, FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT!

Dang, double dang!

Why did I wait soooo long to get one of these!

Seriously, they custom made it for my statute and all that. I sit a bit tall in this saddle, and a little further back. However, this gives me more distance between my foot pegs and seat. No more aching hip joints from being in a cramped position! I’m actually looking over the stock windscreen in its high position, but I’m a tall boy anyway.

As far as my butt comfort…it’s like I’m sitting on air. This ain’t no lie!

Either these folks really know their stuff, or they have the luck of the Irish! Either way, I’m one happy camper! It even feels like I’ve got new shocks!

Warden,

Congratulations on finding the perfect seat for you. Have you riden on other custom seats? ... Rick Mayer, Corbin ...?

Do the wings present any discomfort when riding around town or when your feet on flat on the ground?

Great to hear that you're happy,

I've had three Russel seats on previous BMW's and loved everyone of them,
when I got on this forum the majority kept praising Rick Mayer,
so I bought one of his seats in leather for my 02,
I was quite dissapointed with it,
when I rode out to California, Rick re-did the seat,
He's a great person and I liked the seat much better after the rebuild.
Then I totaled the 02.

My 2005 LT also came with a Rick Mayer leather seat and again I'm not happy with it.
I just bought a stock seat on E-bay so I'll have a seat when I send this one back to be rebuilt.
If I had to do it over, I'd go with Russel.

Warden,

Congratulations on finding the perfect seat for you. Have you riden on other custom seats? ... Rick Mayer, Corbin ...?

Do the wings present any discomfort when riding around town or when your feet on flat on the ground?I've got about 50K miles on Corbins. We have a couple here at the house. Corbins are better than a stock seat, but can't match a "custom" made for you seat. In addition, I've had some issues with Corbin, but I not here to air them out. Also got about that many miles on some "no name" seats too.

I had my heart set on a Rick Mayer seat, but he never returned my emails or phone messages (half dozen).

I got tired of waiting, took a chance with Russell. Their front end girl is named Katie (hello Katie if you're listing!). She walked me through the whole process. This was a very positive experience and the seat fits!

I don't know what you mean by "discomfort when riding around town.." 'cause there aint none! Discomfort, I mean.

Have you ever had a Russel?

Have you ever had a Russel? No, I've never owned a Russell seat. I bought the LT with a Rick Mayer seat on it - I'm very happy with it. Before now, I thought people who bought custom seats had money burning a hole in their pocket. Now I know differently.

When I get around to buying another GS, I don't know whether to go with a Mayer or Russell. Wish I could try both for a while before deciding.

Yeah, you and me both!

I would think these guys would work more closely with the dealerships or cycle gear stores and have some template seats on-hand to at least get an idea if we're in the ballpark of meeting the person's needs. To me that seems like sales and marketing 101??? I know I would have thrown down long ago if I had seen a sample of something that I could use as an example to order from and it fit right. But we're all built differently so I need to see how that template fits before throwing another grand at something that may or may not work for me.

Burns,

The Russell only costs $360 for the pilots seat of the LT.

Plus it's guaranteed.

This couldn't come at a better time, since my keester and back have both ganged up on me and issued an ultimatum, "Better seat or shorter hops".
I've recently tried an RM and a corbin, but neighter of them were a good fit for me. I guess I need to go find what one of these things feel like......soon.

Thanks for the input........ from everyone.

Wardenross,
just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to break-in the new Russell?

First impression when I sat on them was "what did I waste my money on these for". I have them on both bikes and they both took 500 - 1000 miles to fully break-in and after that they now feel like my recliner.

jgburns:
I have 30 inch inseam and with the seat in the high position I can flat foot at stop signs. If you like to slide around on the seat in town the "Wings" might get in the way. I have never noticed this problem yet.

I have never tried a Mayer but suspect they would have a similar break-in period.

I plan on getting a Russell but with 2 weeks for shipping and 2 weeks for fab I didn't want to lose a month of riding time this summer so I decided to hold off until this fall. The only problem is the stock seat sucks so bad I am not sure I will be able to wait.

Just ask your dealer to borrow one for about a month or so. I understand the new LTs have about three combinations of seats available. Your dealership should have a couple left over after exchanges.

Remember! Keep this a secret. Shushhhhhhhhh!

Roy, My stock seat was slap worn out, so the new Russell felt like a Godsend. I'm sure it is breaking in a little day by day. I have a damaged Coccyx (tailbone) and the stock (worn out) seat allowed my Coccyx to hit the seat pan in the rear of the seat. It appears the stock seat pan has a support bend in the middle of the rear for strength. That combined with an upright riding position, can turn this bike into a torture chamber for me.

So even an "unbroken in" Russel feels good to me.

......Have you ever had a Russel? In interest of full disclosure, Rick recently had a high-speed high-side get-off at the track and was out of commission with a few broken bones. I am sure that the lack of communication was an anomaly.

And yes, I have a couple of Russell's and I do highly recommend them.

However, I am strongly considering a RMC for my K12R. It doesn't require the LD characteristics the other two do.

I am getting a new Russell seat, and in fact the production schedule for mine is suppose to start today (4-23-07). I am looking forward to the new seat. However, someone on here posted a price of $360.00. I don't think that is an accurate price, esp for those of us who aren't as thin as we should be. Mine, with a built in back rest, leather inserts, and the plus design for weight, and shipping, is going to be in the $900 range. I am not complaining mind you, I just don't think that previous post is correct as to price. jrlakin

They charged me $420 for the standard seat with the leather inserts. Shipping was an additional $38.75. But again, the standard S1 vinyl seat is $360.

I got my saddle last summer and broke it in going down to Chateau Elan. You sit higher than the stock seat, but Ah the comfort. The stock seat started hurting after a hundred miles. I guess I have a boney butt. The Russell is super.

I went overboard and got all leather, plus the back-rest. I have ridden with and without the back-rest and I feel much more comfortable without the backrest.

The folks at Russell were super and Katie (?) was terrific. A very nice experience working with them
