View Full Version : HyperPro Shocks - Group Buy - Any Interest?

I was volunteered by my friend Gilles to scope out a group buy on HyperPro shocks. I am happy to do this, but would like to gauge interest before approaching any vendors on this.
Kindly respond to this thread and let me know if front and/or rear shocks desired, year and model of your bike. Your response is not a commitment to purchase.
I'll tabulate the responses and see what I can come up with for us . . .
By the way, Gilles, you know what they say about payback, right?

I have Ohlins on my bike but sure would like a HyperPro steering damper!
If you have stock shocks with more than 7.5 K miles REPLACE THEM it is a JoY!

Very fair question.
Here's a current thread (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21845) on Wilbers not being available in the USA any more.
Brother Gilles (Zippy_GG) volunteered me near the end of the thread to look for a deal on HyperPro shocks. Happy to help, and I'll get him back another time. :)

I saw that and you beat me to the punch, I should have said I will be buying Ohlins or Hyperpro in the near future (K1200LT f/r) I will NOT buy Wilburs due to their crappy policies.

Based on the HyperPro USA site the rears for a 1999> are $499 (ea.) and front is the same.
Sooo at list, to replace all 4 shocks it's $2K?
That's w/o the remote reservoir attachment for the rear which is an additional $250 each.
Hmmm, guess I'll go the route "If' it's not broke, don't even mess with it!"

I have sent an request to HyperPro's "contact us" system inquiring about the availability of different spring rates based on typical load for the application.
I have Ohlins on the LT, but am considering upgrading the 12GS.
Will report back with their reply.
I would be interested in a pair of HyperPro shocks if they;
- Offer springs installed that address the typical loads anticipated, a la Ohlins.
and
- Offer a discount of, say, 20% off web list.

I almost ordered Wilburs last week but now am glad I didn't.
Assuming Hyperpro has provision for springing a'la' Olins I would be in for front, rear and steering damper for an 03. I need to be able to get springs for max rated load.

I like the infinite spring preload ability of this shock. With the fully adjustable high and low speed compression and rebound dampening, you could really tune that shock in for a perfect ride.

I'm looking to get front and rear tailored to my riding style, and weight etc. I'm not familar with this company though, so more research is needed before I could commit.
Also, just a note, I have spoken to Klaus a while back about changing the ride height (for me I wanted to add some height for more clearance) and was told that the LT is very sensitive to height adjustments and he recommeded against it. Just an FYI

Oct 9th, 2007, 12:54 pm
I just got off the telephone with the USA Distributor for the HyperPro shocks. I've provided a link to this thread so he can gauge some of the interest and also look through the forums on other group buys.
He is checking with the home office in Holland to see what they can bring to the table. I expect an update from him in the next day or two.
He had some interesting ideas on how to make the group buy "fun," but it is yet too early to discuss these here. I think you all will be pleased if we can work this out.
IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST in the group buy (Shocks and/or Dampers), and you have not yet posted to this thread, please post NOW so Steve can get a better feel for how many of us might be in if he can make the right deal for members here.
Thanks!

The Wilbers Germany site says that Max BMW, the Beemershop and Nick's BMW all service and can sell their shocks. Both Max BMW and the Beemershop advertise them on their home pages. On Nick's BMW site hit the Shop Nick's button and Wilbers are advertised there.
They are available in the US just not from Klaus. Of course they may not give as good a price as Klaus either.

Even from my limited knowledge of Klaus I would say it is highly unlikely he would market a performance shock that wasn't customizable or rebuildable. The Wilbers literature on his old site didn't say much about customizing them either. Send him an e-mail with your questions and he usually answers right back.
Edit:
Dang, I just had to go looking myself. Look here (http://www.wilbersusa.com/motorcycle-shock-quote.htm) to see the information he asks for when ordering shocks. It doesn't explicitly say they are rebuildable so ask him to be sure.
What is more curious is that there is no listing on his site that indicates they make Hyperpro shocks for the K1200LT . Does someone know for sure that they do?
This is not an issue for me because I already have Wilbers for my LT. But they do have them for the R1200GS :yeah:.

We're close, very close. I can tell you that the engineers were scheduled to receive an LT today, Thursday, for doing all that engineer stuff that they do. :)
I have some information on what the group buy will likely look like and what the number s are expected to be, but I have been asked not to release any information until we get confirmation from back at their HQ.
From my conversations with the US importer, I think this is going to be a popular group buy, but until the final word comes in from overseas, nothing is cast in stone.
Hopefully I'll be able to burst out some good information in the next week or so.
I think I posted this before, but HQ and the US distributor are monitoring this thread, so if you have not posted regarding any possible interest, now would be a good time so they know that this group of folks gets pretty serious about group buys. :)

Does this statement say that they need to engineer the shocks? Or are they making some changes or are they looking at 2005+ model... I didn't look to see if they had product for the later model.
The website says they have product already for an LT..
They have some exciting things they are working on, and needed an LT for some testing I suppose. ;) More information soon.

Does the group buy include any other bmw models???
Good question. I will forward to my contact. I would imagine that they would not leave any sale sitting on the table, but I cannot commit for them.

Tony, I believe George Barnes Told me at registration at the IBR he had them on his bike. If you do a search you may find comments from George regarding his setup.

I think I'm interested in a set of shocks and the steering dampener for my 2002 with 32,000 miles. My question is that I'm not sure if I really need to replace them!
I weigh, wet, about 150 and the bike "seems" to handle exactly as it did when new. How do I really know that they need to be replaced? With a car, you can push on a corner and generally tell if the shocks are still working. How can you tell on a bike?

I attended a riding class a few years ago (early 2006) and they talked about suspension and getting it set into the 'optimal' range.. I don't quite understand the travel part optimal adjustment but there is a measurement associated with the condition of the rear shock called 'stiction'... . This takes a few people to do because you need to 'lift' the bike.
So here it goes.. I'm sure this will generate some discussion.. :D
Rear Suspension measurement:
Measure the suspension fully extended.. from the bottom of the bag at a measurable place to a place on the rear end.. You can put it on the centerstand.. (Record the measurement in mm as L1)
Measure from the same point on the bag or the same measurable place you measured the full travel to the rear end.. With the rider on board push down on the back and let the suspension raise the bike to it's normal position. (Record the measurement in mm as L2)
Measure from the same point on the bag or the same measurable place you measured the full travel to the rear end.. With the rider on board Lift up and let the bike sag to it's normal position. (Record the measurement in mm as L3)
Static spring sag is half was between L2 and L3 minus L1. You can use this formula Static Spring Sag = L1 - [(L2+L3)/2]
This is the fuzzy optimal that I don't quite understand..
Knowing that measurement for a street bike you should have 30-35mm travel and your total travel should be 28 - 33 % of that to be considered optimal.. (i.e. adjust your preload setting to this window to get you on the sweet spot of the bikes suspension).
This seems pretty easy to understand..
Now stiction (or mechanical condition) = L3-L2
Rear suspension evaluation
Good Condition = 3mm
Poor Condition = 10mm
OK my bike a few years ago I measured.....
L1 = 22mm
L2 = 16.5mm
L3 = 16.5mm
My evaluation is that I had less than 3mm between sag and support so my rear shock is good.... at the time.. In fact when I measured this with the instructor he said that was really good for a bike with original shocks and, if I remember correctly, about 40K on the ODO.
There was nothing about front because this was about adjusting the preload on the rear shock(s). I have not measured in almost two years but I have noticed that I am starting to get a little sloppy in corners that have some bumps. Almost gives me an uneasy feeling in my butt. That was not there before. Sense I am at 65K on the originals I think that it might be time to invest. I hope to put a lot more miles on and this feeling isn't or hasn't gotten better so it probably won't be going away.
I may be interested in a steering damper also especially if we can get a good group buy price. Not sure how to tell if that part good but my guess is I probably have had good service out everything and I probably need to renew all these items.
Any takers on what is a service limit on the steering damper?

And the steering damper, last time I heard, is an optional part of the incubating group buy.

It was 15°F degrees this morning so I guess this might make a good winter project for us northerners.

. . . well, actually, she's really on short final.
The details of the group buy have been worked out, and the pricing is in place, and it looks pretty good to me. I'm excited about it.
I am working on a draft of the "official" posting with my contact at HyperPro. It will take a little bit for us to edit it to make sure we get it right the first time.
Hang in there folks; we're cleared for landing and we're almost home!

Thought I should give all of you the correct information on the Wilbers shock line!!
We, Nick's BMW in DePere Wisconsin, are a Wilbers Shock Distributor. So the whole line is available right here in the US. Additionally I should mention that we've been selling Wilbers Suspension products since shortly after the shakeup mentioned in one of the earlier emails.
Our service manager recently returned from a week of training at the Wilbers Factory in Germany. The Wilbers shock tools recently arrived so we are up and running with repairs as needed.
You can find us on the net at http://www.nicksbmw.com/ and the complete line of Wilbers shocks at http://www.motorcycle-suspension.com/index_products/index.html click on the model and price list to find your motorcycle. Please note that the prices are listed in Euros.
We can supply Wilbers shocks within 7 days from order placement with Nick's to delivery at your door for an additional fee--that is correct 7 days order to your door!

While I don't know you, I find this a bit tacky. Why not start your own thread? Why would you step all over a Group Buy like this?
Do you want to offer a group buy?
No disrespect intended, but it would turn me off from ever doing business with you.
Again I just think you should have started your own thread. You probably would have gotten more sales that way.

I agree also. The only thing I have decided is that I will be buying something. If they want to start another thread I will listen. We have been patient and I'm hoping that HyperPro has new technology they want to put into play.
They already have shocks that are made for the LT so I expect I will patiently wait to hear what they say.. I have tested other products before with a healthy discount to get over the learning curve of any new product and I expect that HyperPro would stand solidly behind by anything they sold to us.

Ain't thread drift and forum posting ignorance a biotch. LAF didn't start the Wilbers discussion in this thread. If you go back to this post (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=171862#poststop), which is higher up in the same branch of this thread, you will see it was stated that Wilbers shocks were no longer available in the USA. This was in response to the question Why not Wilbers or Ohlins or ...?
That is apparently the information that LAF said he was trying to correct. Actually I already did that but he may not have read my post because it in a different branch below the "Wilbers no longer available in the USA" post. So if correcting misinformation makes him part of the evil empire then continue swinging away.

OK folks, we've danced and we have danced, but the deal is now a reality.
I have the text for the release, and I have the order forms in both PDF and XLS formats for attachments. I have a few notes that I have to preface the "official" text with, but I have to run to the doctor now. [EVIL LAUGHTER]
I will start a brand new thread for the group buy as soon as I return. That way, the info will be at the top and folks won't have to look for it. GT riders, your ole Uncle Tony didn't forget about you, we have good things for you in the group buy as well.
Well, I really have to go, I'm running late already. I will post a link to the new thread here as soon as I get back. Believe me, I'd rather be typing the info here than going to the pain doctor, so quitcha bitchin. ;)
Hey, you've waited this long, what's a few more hours?
OK, now I'm REALLY leaving. . . TTFN

JD is right on target. While I think the post on Wilburs seemed inappropriate to me at the time, it was pointed out to me that he was merely correcting an error at the beginning of the thread, which seems so far back.
I feel that advertising another source/brand/vendor in this particular thread may have approached the limits of propriety and went beyond correcting the error, but let's remember, we ALL make mistakes in posting from time to time (and by "we" I of course do not mean myself! :histerica )
We take care of our own, folks.
OK, now I am really, really, really off to the doctor... :D
