I was out for a spin a while back and stopped at a State Park. A guy on a GW stopped and chatted with me for a while. Anyway, I'll get right to the point.
He said that Wisconsin has the most motorcycles per capita. I'm not sure where he found that out, but am wondering if it is true. I've searched this site, I tried Google, I tried the NTSB, state DOTs... nothing.
Does anyone know of a place to find this info? Vehicle registrations would be best to account for all the used machines out there. New cycle sales (per state) would be a good estimate I guess. Anything regarding the numbers of cycles out there broken down by state. State and model would be great too. Yes, I'm sure Cali has the most cycles registered, but I'm looking for sales over total population and other normalized info.
Just curious.

Well, if I could find the thread, UncleRock had some stats on that sort of thing a couple of months ago...
At least, I think he did... my mind is on "Friday Shut-down"... :(
Edit: Here is the thread I was thinking of: http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17325&highlight=stats+state

excellent... just what I was looking for.
I guess the guy was correct. We have the most cycles registered per population.
Wisconsin (23.2 people per motorcycle)
'Zona is a very close second (24.54)
Fla (34.63)
Ohio (38.0)
Penn (42.03) round out the top 5.
Let me continue just to make a point.
Michigan (43.43)
Illinois (45.0)
5 of the top 7 cycle registrations per population are states in the Midwest. ROCK ON!!
Cali - with a year round riding season - (54 people per motorcycle)
Texas - same thing - (72.65)
Figure every family is 4 people, roughly speaking that means 1 of every 6 Wisconsin households has a motorcycle. :thumb: Compare that to Cali with 1 cycle for every 13.5 households.

Havn't been to Cal lately now have you - most of the households I see around have about 15 people not counting those sleeping in the car...... That's all I'm going to say about that.

When you stop and think about it, it's a fairly silly statistic. Then again, most "per capita" statistics are silly, IMO. Wisconsin barely has 5 million people in the whole state. New York CITY has 8 million people. Get my point?

If you ever go to the BMWMOA rally you will meet a ton of people from Wis.
so based on this fact and some WAG method calculations I agree with those numbers

Per capita is a crappy way to do statistics....
Look at Costilla County Colorado....small crappy county in the San Luis Valley.. It was my first department I worked for back in Feb of 1998. They are 99.9999999% hispanic....40% illegal immigrant(they add to crime rate but not to census)...Oldest Catholic Church in the U.S. I believe(may be just in Colorado..can't remember) has a shrine..
I was a Deputy there...only white officer in the department...and I caught a LOT of slack and learned Spanish very quickly.....bad words first ofcourse..
My point..: They are in the top 5 for having the highest Felons per capita in the US... but there is only about 2000 people in the county!.. doesn't mean you have to carry a sidearm 24hrs day...but there are places like the HAMPTONS for instance that has a higher crime rate than Costilla County...
I just do not agree with them..

Interesting side note (that doesn't necessarily correlate with m/c per capita). The annual BMW MOA mileage contest frequently shows Wisconsin with the most contest finishers. Ex: last year, WI had 143 finishers w/aggregate 1,421,000 miles, and CA/TX/FL combined had 138 finishers with 1,569,300 miles!! Although WI has more wintertime, the contest is held between the months of April and October, so some equality in riding conditions.
