After we saw the movie (very funny btw), which kinda poked fun at the yuppie Harley riders, my family asked what category of "biker dudes" beemer/LT riders fall into......... Well I don't quite know!!!! How about the former Harley riders on here, what is the correct answer?

This is all tongue in cheek:

Most Beemer riders don't fall into any category of "biker dudes". You've started in the wrong taxonomic group, making your's a sophistic question.

For a proper taxonomic system you'll have to break down your groups further; here's a proposed system for "BMW Riders":

1.Those BMW owners who have never owned or ridden any bike but a BMW.
This group could be subdivided as follows:
a. Those who have only ridden/owned Airheads.
(some would argue these are the only true BMW riders)
b. Those who have only owned airheads, oilheads, and K-bikes.
(These folks can be considered genuine BMW enthusiasts and only considered as posers by those in Group 1a.
c. Those who have F-series BMWs.
(These aren't really BMW riders because we all know the F-series bike isn't really a BMW anyway).

2. Those BMW owners who rode another brand of bike, but never a HD, then got a BMW and never looked back.
(These riders are among the annointed, chosen few, being very close in purity to those in Group 1.

3. Those BMW owners who were HD riders, but became enlightened, bought a BMW and never looked back.
(These folks have been blessed, having served their time in self imposed purgatory, and are among the enlightened. This group can be divided into two subphlya):
a. Those who still dress and act like "bikers", wear chaps, etc.
b. Those who have traded in their leathers for AeroStitch and Gerbings. (Clearly, subgroup "b" is further evolved that is subgroup "a".

4. Those BMW owners who still have a HD, or keep talking about when they had a HD, and those who will go back to a HD.
(From a BMW perspective these are the true posers, and these are the only "BMW riders" who fall into some sub-group of "biker-dudes".)
There are those who would argue that Group 4 really dosen't belong in "BMW riders" group at all, but rather belongs in the Class: "HD riders who own a BMW"

I am definitely a type 2, having owned all Japanese brands including 2-stroke models, before my 1st beemer, a 99 LT.
But I do like the sound of the V twin though... Is this considered some kind of a syndrome, which would make it "not my fault, it's a recognized disease" ?

3 a and 1/2 with a new '06 last Sept and loving it.

HD does have a good line of FXRG jackets and foul weather gear. I have one leather and one foul weather jacket and the foul weather over alls. And they are paid for. The other part of that is my Bride of 34 years is not over me buying the bike yet so if I start buying BMW or Aerostitch cloths she may have me taking this rolling hotel to another level.....

Not that I am chicken or anything, just know when to hold 'em and know when to run....

I THINK the Wild Hogs movie had it right. Many yuppie HD owners ARE posers. BMW riders are the real deal/real riders. I, too, was once a poser. But I overcame this with loving support from my family and friends.

That makes me a 3.a - while I've always had a FG or HG jacket, I still prefer the leathers - and after 35 years of riding anything on wheels, I wouldn't be caught in anything areostitch.... I have a hard enough time with a full face helmet on REALLY cold/wet days....

I'm a non-card-carrying 4a.

Still have the Sporty; did my 1200 conversion, do maintenance, and have enjoyed the bike. Added the LT for long-distance and comfort but would like to attend a tech session to learn how to work on this piece of machinery.

I don't own a pirate outfit but do wear chaps. I don't see myself in Aerostich or Gerbings anytime but have been called a "biker dude" because I wear a Joe Rocket mesh jacket.

Ahhh, the joys of motorcycle ownership - and the freedom of riding!

Regards,
Curt

Most interesting of all is this need to categorize riders. Seems all vaguely orwellian to me......Rather than "Orwellian", wouldn't that actually be "Huxley-esque"?

Still, your point is a good one. We like to categorize everything and anything; it seems to make it easier to understand the way the world works... and our place in it.

Hey Bikers/riders!! :D

I guess I am a #4 since I bought my HD after I bought my LT. You see, my LT is too big to get around in the city, especially with all the streetcar rails we have downtown, so I bought the HD to get around town and my LT is my highway/touring bike. I don't like one more than the other as they both serve different purposes, but at least I am on 2 wheels all of the time, whether it is my LT or my HD.

Maybe we should make one more category.....#5

#5-those who have a BMW and bought their HD afterwards for whatever reason which would make them a rider dude.

What do you think?

Rubber side down, shiny side up :yeah:

The movie is full of laughs.... I never go to the theater (netflicks) but I took SO to see WildHogs on the big screen. We had a great time.

I loved it when the Guru-in-Chief, Peter Fonda showed up, what a cameo!

I've owned dang near every type of KawaSuzuHonYamZuki and put 80k on a 67-FLH.

I still enjoy the sport of HD floccinaucinihilipilification and regularly abuse "Boutique Bikers" on my blog.

I must be a 3a. I still like my leather and I wear a half helmet a lot. I hate being boxed into a full face unless it's very cold. The temps get over 100 here and I can't see riding with a full face in that kind of heat. Everyone has their own definition of a "biker". I've always considered myself a motorcycle rider. I never really fit the biker mold. I love my LT but I also miss my moderately loud pipes and black leather saddlebags. I don't buy into the Harley thing and I don't buy into the "I gotta look like them" thing. I guess I'll just do it my way. Seems to have worked so far........... :D

You sent me to the dictionary for this one...

Floccinaucinihilipilification: is "the act or habit of estimating or describing something as worthless, or making something to be worthless by deprecation".

Well said!

I started out on a 1973 Honda CD360T when I was in college. From there on, until now, I had Kawasakis until I decided I needed more protection from the wind. If you think some of the comments you hear from HD riders on why their ride is better than everyone else's are funny, check out the gyrations folks with big metric vtwins go through to distance themselves from the HD crowd while all the while trying to fit in with them.

4 (a) for me. Best of both worlds.
Sportster was a b'day gift. 1st bike after a 30 yr haitus. Got the LT a year later to satisfy a long-suppressed lust for fine engineering.

The inimitable sound and feel of the Sporty satisfies the hedonist tendencies (30 minutes at a time), whereas the LT is my sophisticated mistress (but she can rock if I'm in the mood) for the long haul or need the cargo space.

Leather in cool weather, 1st Gear Mesh Tex in warm. It's all good. :D

I've owned BSA, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Scorpa, so I guess that makes me a #2. But there is one category left out; Those who have owned other brands, (not HD) who have made their way to BMW, but still might purchase another Jap bike. Would that be a 2A? ;)

I am a 4A and proud of it, I bought my Harley brand new 27 years ago after owning a Moto Guzzi and a few Jap bikes and we have been through a lot of miles and lots of good times together and I will never sell it,

I still enjoy the looks and feel of my Wide Glide.

I have only had the LT for 3 years and 20k miles, I mostly bought it for the comfort and touring features but its lots of fun on the back roads too and I enjoy grinding the pegs around turns as much as sailing on the highway.

Both of my bikes get ridden hard and neither one is a show piece.... Chrome don't get you home!!

I am an old school biker with tattoos and a LOVE for all motorcycles, but not all motorcyclist or should I say motorcycle owners... you have to ride to be a motorcyclist

As far as I am concerned I have the best of both worlds

THE BADGE of HONOR with most "bikers" I know is the road grime, odometer reading, and the knowledge of "how to home wrenching" factor. NOT just the brand of bike you ride!! :thumb:
