Question
After performing routine service and reconnecting the battery, the starter wants to engage with key off and kill switch off??

any ideas???

push the starter button while you touch the negative cable to the battery negative then release. looks like you have a stuck starter relay and your battery may be low

Does your bike happen to be a 99 or 2000? In this case it is the infamous stuck relay thingie. Upgrading to the updated relay is rather pricey, but you may never have to if you promise to always keep your battery charged.
Use the method described by Raffy to unstick your starter relay first. Then do NOT attempt to start the bike until you have a fully charged battery.
