I have read about it for several years on this form, but never thought it would happen to me. Thought I was immune - comes with youth (58).

My BMW dealer says “it’s the ABS module". "What does that mean"? "Just a little over $2,000.00” he says.

Not that she's not worth it, but at 6 years old and 45,000 miles I'll remove the flashing light and ride w/o ABS just as I have for most of the 40+ years I have ridden.

I FEEL BETTER NOW - THANKS

Do a search before you give up hope for your ABS unit. Many people have had success with a complete flush including the modulator and having the system reset at the dealer. Also, a weak battery can cause problems. Even if the battery seams OK it may not be good enough.

I can't believe the number of people who actually disable the warning lights. I think there is a small business here for someone that wants to rebuild ABS units.

Good Luck,
Kevin

Ouch.. that's not good at all.. I hope you don't have a situation where the ABS would have helped...

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

There are "used" ones available... and might even have folks in your area who could help with the replacement...

at $2k, that's huge for me.... it might be better to trade up than spend the $2k...

Best wishes...

I am sort of in the same situation--the bike just isn't worth the $2000 it would cost to fix it. There are used units out there I guess, but I have been looking for one for over 6 months now, and I have yet to actually find one. For now, with a 2000 LT with 22000 miles on it, I am just going to ride it without ABS. It is worth probably 7500 with the ABS, and my guess is I would be lucky to get a dealer to give 5000 on a trade--although in all honesty I haven't talked to a dealer about a trade.

I too had an issue with my ABS unit. Last fall, my dealer was able to actually perform a repair in the unit (replaced the check balls) and it was fine. Then only a few rides into this season, the lights came back on.. this time, although my battery was only one year old and always on the tender, it was only at half-power and replacing it once again resolved the ABS fault.

I didn't have to pay for this new battery, as I just left the bike there! Yup.. I traded away my LT and purchased a brand new.. out-of-the-crate V Strom DL 1000K7! I was very happy to trade my old bike for a brand new ride and only have to fork over a few bucks to do it. Now I'm out riding a new bike under warranty and not worrying about the ABS, rear drive failure, etc. Riding!

This bike is a blast and I can actually do a lot of the maintenance myself.. which I never dared on the LT.

I may come back to BMW in the future (GS Adventure!).. but now I have a bike that is way toooo fun for the backroads of N. Idaho!

Good luck with your ABS issues.. and be careful out there!
