My 02 K12 has developed an oil leak around the rear of the oil sump cover. I understand that there is no gasket that the cover is coated with a type of silicone coating then bolted back in place. Has anyone had any experience with doing this? What type of silicone did you use? How difficult was the job?

Did it not too long ago. Used HondaBond for the gasket material, just a tiny bead that you kinda mush with your finger around the pan. The only assache was 1 bolt is up under the center stand support and you gotta have some patience. Took me about an hour to do the whole job.
Let me know if you need more info...happy to help.

Thanks, I haven't tackled the job yet, just changed my oil last month and only have about 2000 miles on it. Was it fairly easy to clean both mating edges without oil dripping out once you drained the oil?

Drain all the oil, loosen up the pan and go have some coffee while it all drains. Put some newspaper under your bike....and continue to remove the pan, youll have some oil there, but not loads of it....take the pan all the way off to make sure you clean any previous gasket material...this is key.

Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Maker. The only gasket sealeant I have used for years now on cars and bikes. Pretty much the same material many auto manufacturers are using to seal oil pans now, no gaskets used.

That is all I used to use on my cars (intake manifolds) for the "china wall". Then I tried the Permatex "Right Stuff" and it is even better than the ultra black. It comes in a pressurized can for dispensing, very nice and easy to use.

Finally took bike to the dealer, main oil seal and clutch slave cylinder were leaking. Expensive repair done.
