Hi folks, I just picked up a 2000 LT yesterday and it has the most annoying howl from about 65 to 75 miles per hour (right where I like to ride). My 99 LT did not have the same hi pitch as this. The sound appears to be coming from the drive train. You could hear it a little on my old 99 but it has not nearly as piercing as it is on this bike. When you pull in the clutch it immediately goes away. Also, if you throttle up to 80 or down to 60 it’s gone. Shifting to a lower gear makes it stop as well.

I am positive that it is not tires. I do know the sound of howling tires and this is not it.

Unfortunately I didn’t hear the noise on the test ride. I’d like to resolve the problem ASAP as the previous owner has agreed to take the bike back.

Any suggestions?

I think the only thing that might help is changing the fluids. Perhaps going to synthetics...at least in the tranny and rear. My '02 would vary from ride to ride. Sometimes I didn't notice it at all, and on other rides it got quite annoying. Fortunately for me, it occured at 55mph. A speed that's easily avoided, no matter the posted speed limit.

My '00 LT did the same. Since I did not use 5th gear much, it wasn't a factor, just annoying and never found a solution.

Was there ever a diagnosis on what made the noise?

Sure this isn't just "k-whine" and nothing to worry about?

The (in)famous K-whine is not due to tranny gears, it's the gear teeth in the primary drive (from the crank to the intermediate shaft) -- all on the engine side of the clutch. Very normal, very characteristic of the flying brick"

I accepted it as K whine and moved on. It occurred in such a narrow band that I never bothered to talk about it with the dealer. That and spending most of my time in 4th and reserving 5th for, uh, speeds above what are posted on Interstates by about 1.25%. :)

I have a 2000 LT that I just had a full service completed ( kiss that grand goodbye !) Having just strated riding it after double shoulder surgery ( not fun!) it has that same whine at 65+/-. Pull in the clutch and it goes away.

Don't remember it at all prior to the service. Wonder if it is a type of oil/fluids used by the dealer? Don't know what was in it prio as I had just purchased it in August 06' and only put 5-600 miles on it.

It is annoying though, whines like a lil' kid in a candy shop.

Made a noise that could wake the dead, in a very narrow RPM band, and easily repeatable. Brought it to the dealer's attention; they tweaked the front end plastic pieces and it hasn't happened since.

Why would you not use 5th? Is fuel THAT cheap over there?

Yup.. the Wizards put some of the "loop" side of velcro between the plastic parts. Problem GONE!

If the bike's had the rear drive pulled, I wonder if the FD shaft was synced?

It isn't a fuel cost issue. If I wanted to save on fuel costs I would buy a scooter. I just felt the LT was more responsive in 4th. May be one reason I dumped the LT and got the GT. ;)
