I was just warming up after my chilly run in to work this morning (read 36 degrees on the thermometer) when I realized I HAVE NO FARKLES!!!! NONE!!!!

At first I was a bit concerned, but then I began to look at this in a different light; maybe I did not need farkles? Maybe the bike is perfect stock?

Nah, I at least need a GPS and a new seat.

It does amaze me how well I have gotten along with this bike stock though. Every I bike I have owned has had at least $1000 thrown at it to make it more comfortable or allow more storage space or shine more or .....

You've done nothing? Even with Burke's quote at the bottom of your sig line?
But serially, I think you got it right the first time. The bike needs nothing (except perhaps HID). It is we riders who think we "need" farkles, or just decide that we want them. And that can be a long road to perdition.

haha :rotf: I would definitely agree with you there. Mine was completely stock when I bought it used. Not a single addition (save for the BMW options). It was a great bike that way. I guess the farkles I have added aren't necessary, they just make riding a little more enjoyable.

I added PIAAs to improve night riding - I seldom ride at night.
I replaced the foggy OEM large shield with a CB - probably the only thing I "needed" to do.
I recently added XM since I was paying for a subscription but using it only in my car.
I added a fuzz buster solely because I needed to balance my XM addition on the left side with something on the right. :D

I'm working on passenger armrests for the S.O. and a trailer to pack a little more stuff when going campin this summer.

None of the above were/are required. I guess the only thing I really "need" to do is address the seat, but that is only a problem when doing 300+ miles in a day. Typically, I don't ride that far, but plan to beginning this year.

I felt the same way when I first got mine. I assumed adding "stuff" would be expensive and make the bike look tacky (wires hanging everywhere, cluttered instrument panel, etc). I just started realizing how I could improve my riding comfort AND enjoyment. It is certainly a capable, enjoyable, comfy bike straight off the showroom floor though. :bmw:

Ari's bike is the prime example of how farkle-ing can be good!

My brother (Tony) has a 2003 LT-C and has only one farkle installed. The BMW cupholder. That's IT!!! And I had to talk him into that "mod" for six months. He loves everything I do to my bikes, but he'll have no part of it on his own. It's actually gotten to be quite amusing.

I will say that these online forums are no good for a guy that wishes to keep his bike bone stock. I didn't even know how to spell "Gee Pee Ess" until I found bmwlt.com. :D

Yeah, my bike used to be stock when I bought it....

I got contaminated the first weekend with the Autocom installation.

Let's see where and when it all ends.:rotf:

It's the American Way, i.e., "If some's good, more's better!!!!!"
Whatever appears to make the bike more comfortable or user-friendly is a good thing. Anything to do with enhancing conspicuity or improving lighting such as HID's are not farkles in my book. Like David Shealey said, "Adding HID's are the best bang for the buck".

Try to stay down close to 4000K color operating temperature on the HID's. Blue is unusable light emitted and is the first visible wavelength the human eye focuses on, hence annoyance to oncoming cage/truck drivers. Just look at the young 'slammers' who install their el-cheapo blue HID's typically found on the small Japanese cars with semi-loud mufflers!

Incidentally, I have just purchased two H7 (low beam 4100K) HID replacement bulbs from Autolamps-Online (HID-Online). There was a price break for two...I am willing to sell one of them for $80.00, including shipping...if interested, PM me.

I would love to keep my 06 stock but I have this nagging desire to spend $800.00 on a seat. Or is it the fact that the seat sucks so bad that it is either spend the money or sell the bike. Hooray for stock bikes!!

Rode in today, a balmy 38 degrees here in Seattle. Followed a guy on an early k bike I think. He was wearing some sort of coat that was ballooning up from the wind, sneakers, (I could see his white athletic socks.) At least he did have gloves. I thought to myself, I do like sitting back here behind a great wind busting Cee Bailey, dressed in leather from chin to toe, heated clothing, seat and grips, lots of aux lighting to be very safe and visable, , just jambing to XM. Farkles are god, god is good.

I, too, am farkleless...and proud of it! Well, I did add Ohlins, but not before my stock shocks wore out so that shouldn't really count.

Who says it has to end, Ari? When you run out of stuff to do, you can always buy another bike and start all over again. :D

OK, so to help alleviate this problem, any suggestions on Farkles? What and in what order? My butt would appreciate a good seat, other than that I am wide open.

OK, you finally came to your senses and start talking business...:p

Now, let's see:

1. HID conversion and if that is not enough bunch of Motolights, PIAA's Hella's or whatever.
2. Custom seat (Kontour, Russell, Mayers, Corbin or whatever suits you)
3. New windshield (CeeBailey etc)
4. Intercom unless your bike came with one as stock
5. GPS
6. J-Pegs, Ottomans or whatever you prefer
7. Footpeg lowering kit (depending on your height / inseam)
8. Back-up backrest
9. Bag liners
10. Saddlebag reflectors to LED's
11. Thomas air compressor and that leads us nicely to the elctricals:
12. Decent fuse blocks (one rear one front)
13. main relay to feed all your extra gadgets + bunch of switches and relays to command all of them
14. You guys on that side of the pond like radar detectors and XM radios.
15 CB or bike-to-bike radio
16. iPod connection
17. Gerbing clothing and permanent Heat-Trollers for rider and passenger
18. New chip for the engine and if you like sportier sounds then you need Remus exhaust
19. Flashing brake light
20. Trailer hitch for trailer towing or just rear luggage rack

That should keep you busy for a while...

The next poster can continue from this.

Good luck

Number 16 (Ipod connector) looks real interesting. Is it difficult? Where can I find the directions?

Not that the rest don't look like fun, but I need to start slow. :)

I will need to ramp up the farkles as I just sold my car and have gone to just the bike for the summer. I am likely moving back to chicago at the end of the summer so there may not be a car in my future. There will however always be my bike.

RegardsAri, it will end for you when you go out to the garage one day and you can't find the LT behind all the gadgets, gizmos, and mods you have added to it. It will be somewhere behind the espresso machine, right next to the geiger counter. :D

Sheesh, guys gimme a break! Everybody is putting the blame on me...

Soon I will be sued by desperate housewives who can no longer buy food for the family as the husband is using all the household money on the LT farkles.

Hey all you lawyers out there, I need good (and inexpensive) legal advise!!

I think I will start looking for an escape route...

At first, check the iPod / MP3 section of this forum. There you will find a lot of information and if you don't - post your questions and you will be answered.

Don't forget Ari's trailer with the portable generator to keep everything powered! :histerica

I am basically one of the farkleless crowd. I do have the headlight protector, passenger armrests and low beam HID, but that's about it for me. Clean and lean is the way I like it!

Ari,

You just let me know who you need "taken care of", and I'll see to it that the job gets done quickly, discreetly, and painlessly. I have a few Uncles that are "in the business" (if you know what I mean?). ;) Just say the word. :)

I bought my bike used and loaded with extras. A 2005 LT. The only thing I added was a Chicane Tank Bag. Moi Importante.

I haven't seen any need to add anything to mine. Can't think of what it would be if I wanted to.
