I know there are many variables, but with enough responses maybe a conclusion of life can be reasonably drawn.

Odometer reads 34K miles on the LT, but it's 10% less as measured by GPS. The condition indicates it might have lasted another 20K miles if the Dot-4 fluid had not contaminated the clutch after the slave cylinder failed. About $500 for the materials, I'm doing the labor.

Wasn't there a thread not long ago on GPS for cumulative distance measuring? What I remember from it was the a GPS is great for measuring speed, but not as good as a substitute odometer. Dunno, just regurgitating what I recall. :)

52k, original clutch, no signs that it needs to be replaced yet.

Good idea. If I knew how to edit it I would. How about if folks just add a response with that info. I am at 32k with no problems.

7500 and I smoked mine headed the Vt for the MOA rally last year. Dealer replaced under warranty. :)

Can I vote twice? Or maybe three times? Once at 35K, and once at 85K on my '02 LT. And my '99 was starting to slip at 36K miles before I got rid of it (OK, ran off the road and into a ditch, same difference. :))
I sure do love the multi-plate wet clutch on my new GT, as opposed to that old-technology single-plate dry clutch on the LT.

Mine was just replaced at 74K due to a leaking clutch basket O-ring. If not for the oil contamination, the clutch was on track for a 200K life.

I am rather disgusted with my whole 1200lt at this point. I have owned about 2 years bought it new. Rides great when operating but more problems than not. 2 crush rings leaked on different oil changes. Has had all four speakers replaced. At least three radio heads i think four all together. Two times the dealer ordered european radios (or were mistakenly sent by corporate according to dealer) Has been towed atleast 4 times for dead battery. They finally told me I was one of about 2 in country who's 1200lt searches for cds in the changer even when the bike is turned completely off. Had first Clutch replaced last summer at about 16000 miles. Now only 2000 miles later the thing is slipping and has been in shop for 3 weeks and now that I called BMW NA customer service they havent even started to work on it. The problems have all been fixed and covered under warrantee but a major hassle trying to rely on bike for work commute never mind consider actually touring on it. Asked the dealer last summer if covered with the lemon law and told no cause it was all fixable and over a year old. They offered to replace my '05 with an new bike in summer of '06 but wanted me to pay like 6 or $7000 for the depreciation on the '05. My first BMW and would be hard pressed to recommend it to others.... I hope not alot of others have had similar experiences. I know nothing about engines and figured I would get a BMW because I heard they easily go for 200K miles. The only way I see me getting this bike 200k miles is if I ship it to europe and back a couple times. Did I mention at least two power ports have short circuited and blown when I needed my heated clothing to come back from Maine this winter?? Any suggestions?? Is there any change of an extended warrantee at this point?? Thanks Mark

Mark.. how about giving us some info on yourself.. fill in the profile, please.
I've got an '05 and had a few glitches...
Mostly, I haven't seen it as a "design" problem. To me it is defects in "runout"... not enough attention to clearances, etc.
This "problem" can be blamed upon "on time" manufacturing process as follows. BMW "farms out" many of the parts to vendors. These vendors have agreements to deliver a certain number of good parts with some "fallout". If a number of these "fallouts" occur at / near the same time from multiple vendors, you end up with a machine full of "issues".
There is then the concern that some of these "fallout" parts end up in the service/repair stream.
Finally, there is the "human factor".. yup, just some of the interesting things that happen when people interact... it is even more interesting when you add the mechanical component (pun intended)..

Yep, 101k and no replacement/slippage. And, never buy a used dry plate BMW from a guy who's replaced a clutch - mho.

05 model (April 04 build date :eek: ) bought new Sept 05.
Clutch fried at 16,000m (27000km). :mad::mad:
No leaks, just worn out and slipping.
Slave cylinder OK.
Weep hole drilled by dealer when clutch changed. :yeah:
Job done under warranty...... :D:bmw::D
...and I remember that post about Odometer v GPS/distance. I think the upshot was that while LT speedo is off by ~ 10%, the odometer is correct! GPS is good for checking accurate speed.
