Motorcyclist Dies In Castro Valley Crash
POSTED: 2:19 pm PDT March 27, 2007
CASTRO VALLEY -- A motorcyclist died after being thrown under the wheels of a big-rig in Castro Valley Tuesday morning, authorities said. The Alameda County coroner's bureau identified the man as Gregory Allen Thomas, 49, of Livermore. The accident occurred at 7:10 a.m. during commute traffic, California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Cheever said. Thomas was riding westbound on Interstate Highway 580, and lane-splitting between slow-moving vehicles as he approached the northbound state Highway 238 connector, Cheever said. When Thomas' motorcycle came into contact with the rear of a big-rig, he was thrown onto the roadway and into the path of the rear portion of the truck, Cheever said. Thomas died at the scene. The big-rig, which was hauling sand, was traveling about 15-20 miles an hour. Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash and charges are not expected to be filed against the big-rig driver. The I-580 to Highway 238 connector ramp was closed to traffic until 9 a.m. while authorities investigated the crash, Cheever said.
