98 R1100RT Trans clunk

I just bought this bike with 40k and as I am new to Beemers, I was wondering about a clunk I get once in a while. I noticed it as I pulled into the garage. I put it in 1st and as I released the clutch, it had a lil clunk noise. I pulled the clutch in and tried it again and no noise. I did this a few times and got the noise about 30% of the time. Is this normal? It shifts fine otherwise. Thanks..

Completely normal to most BMW transmissions. It has to do with how they cut the gears.

Welcome to the Beemer asylum. I think you will like it a lot here. The clunk is one of the many noises that gives these bikes the character we love so much.

Have you noticed the "R" bike start up (valve train) rattle yet? It only lasts a couple of seconds, but seems to be the most talked about noise in Beemerville.

What a relief! I was hoping it was inherit to the bike but I needed to talk to the seasoned experts. Thanks for the reponses!!! :)

In time you'll learn the fine art of 'pre-loading' your shifts i.e. applying gentle pressure on the shift lever before the actual shift, and the clunk will diminish. Keeping the rpm's up helps too.
