View Full Version : Most likely cause for EHCS not working?

Hello LT'ers,

Long time no speak! My EHCS ('05 LT) has been intermittent at times - sometimes it just won't cooperate, most of the time it works fine. I always made sure I was on level ground, in neutral, no brake or clutch, etc. This was a periodic issue but for the most part worked fine.

This week I had the bike in the shop for a new set of tires (I have the 12K service scheduled in 2 weeks but I had thread showing in one spot) and I noticed that since then, the EHCS isn't working at all. I get the fast flashing centerstand indicator the first press, second press I get the [!] on the LED display. I tried making sure the brake pedal/lever and clutch levers are fully retracted, and while I am going back in 2 weeks, I am trying to figure out what is up with the EHCS.

From my Clymer manual, it shows the following connected to the EHCS control unit:
- Reverse Control Unit (?)
- Stop Light Relay (?)
- Sidestand Switch (forgot to check this one)
- Raise Switch (don't think it's this, as when I press it I get the flashing light)
- Centerstand UP (I am assuming this is a sensor of some kind)
- Centerstand Relay (?)
- Fuses

I will check the fuses and the sidestand switch, after that, any ideas on which of the above are the most likely candidates for causing the EHCS not to work?

Thanks!
OB

Do you have an Ice Link hooked up in place of your CD player? Mine made my center stand go nuts also. Had to pay $460 for BMW to diagonse it, I thought it was just a problem with the LT's electronics. The CD changer/Ice Link is some how connected through a common wiring harness to the computer same as the center stand is. If you have a ICE Link just unplug it and see if the stands works.

Thanks dmatson,

I forgot to say no IceLink - I disconnected it a year ago due to battery drain issues, plus with the Sirius I don't need it as much as before.

Last night I checked the connections in and around the EHCS unit, all looked OK, I also looked for the sidestand up sensor; found a cable coming out of the top of the sidestand bracket, but couldn't locate the connector. I think the sensor is working, as it won't start in 1st gear unless I put the sidestand up.

I did see one post about the center rear light license light being burned out, but I think that would cause the brake error light to come on (it's not).

Anyways thanks for any ideas.

Bob,

Checked the circuit diagram and you have it all listed except for the EHCS controller and there is a relay that is driven by the controller.

No real easy way to trouble shoot other than swapping out parts. The side stand switch (SPDT) passes current through the reverser controller and up to the EHCS controller which then drives the relay if it does not see the brakes on (from the stop light relay) when you press the button. There is also a limit switch on the actuator. I have not heard of anyone getting a new controller yet so it may be the limit switch on the actuator.

Good Luck

I have had a problem also.Mine was struggling to reach its limit as if the battery was running flat.Diagnostics had shown a faulty control unit.New one fitted but still the same.New ram fitted also and now all OK.All done under warrenty on my 05 LT.
