My buddy's LT has a tight .005 intake valve clearance on one valve. My service manual ( BMW published 2002) states that the tolerance is .005 to .007 while everywhere else I read it says .006 to .008. Which is correct and do you adjust a "tight .005 valve " or do you play wait and see by checking again a few thousand miles down the road? Thanks, Ron Ray

Not sure how much good I did though...

Changed bucket from a 2.90 to a 2.85 on two intake valves and the reading didn't really change much... Hopefully there's a little wear in on the new bucket that will give me some more....

I just wanted to do it so I could get the practice.. Now I should be able to do the entire process in short order...

Good Luck,

John

Ron, I've always followed the .006" to .008" for the intakes. And yes, I would definitely adjust a tight .005", since I have always adjusted tight .006" valves!

My $.02.

The correct tolerance is .006 - .008. If the valve is not within this spec it needs to be adjusted, plain and simple.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more, I've recently discovered that the leafs in my feeler gauge are a bit small, as determined by a good quality (Starrett) micrometer. The .006" is really .005 1/2", and the .010" is about .009 1/4". So if it measures tight, it REALLY is tight!

There is an error on one page in the service manual! Evidently the person writing that page converted MM to Inch and instead of rounding the number just truncated it. On the other page that gives clearances it is done correctly. 0.006-0.008" is the correct reading.

If it is 0.005", FIX IT! A little loose is not a problem, a little tight is.
