Well I took the covers off to service (PIA). The felt washers on there keep me from seeing the keeper on the ball joint. So what is the exact sequence of repair? Do I need to remove the bolt holding the center bracket and then look for the clip to remove from the tranny link.? Or do you remove the link behind the peg mount first? For a simple job it is kind of a pain. I was unable to download the service link, something about the graphics is odd and did not allow access. Rummaged thru numerous threads but did not find any specifics on the service. Only make sure you add this to your 12K service.---Rethy

On an earlier post I mentioned removing the TOP keeper pin and popping the ball joint loose. I do the TOP one because you can SEE and manipulate the plate to such a position to give you 2-3" of work space. YOU NEED A GOOD LIGHT, MAGNIFYING GLASSES :o , AND LONG NOSE PLIERS. Once you pop loose the to joint the rest are easily disassembled and lubricated with a white lithium based lube/grease.

I have found it a whole lot easier to remove the lower fairing as it makes access just that much easier and you can see up in there.

On the tranny link remove the clip on the end that has it facing you (you will see the little loop at the end of the clip). Once that is off pop the ball loose and then swing the assy so you can get to the second clip on the other end. Assemble in the reverse order. The felt washers make it a pain to re-install the clips. You just have to compress the joint until the clip is in. Better to deal with it in the garage than out on the road.

Someone a while ago was selling an upgrade linkage. Can anyone recall who and where I can find one?

Thanks.

I bought one last year. Mine (before I bought the new one) fell apart at the end of a 10,000 km round trip to Vancouver. Lucky it was only 1/2 km from home. Fixed the old one and ordered the new one. Then 11,000 km later (Again about 5 km from home) the old one fell apart again and I had the new one to install. Installed it in the parking lot of the auto body place my trailer was getting painited. (after I was telling them that I haven't had any problems with my BMW as compared to a HD). I had to borrow a 3/8" wrench to install it. The new one was MUCH easier to install since it had better flats on it for the wrench. I would recommend you upgrade to the new one (don't remember where I got it. I think it was on EBay). I don't remember removing any clips. Just screwed the ball linkage into the tranny and shift arm.

Phil Johnston (philjohn) sold me mine, was $52 delivered. Checking back through the posts, Gilles (Zippy_GG) bought a couple and posted how much he liked them, so I got one. A couple of pleasant emails between Phil and I, a check in the mail, and the spiffy replacement linkage got here super fast.

Now, if only I can figure out how to install the bloody thing (or sucker one of my mates to do it for me)! :D

Thanks for the kind remark Averill. I didn't realize you were stuck up against the Jersey Barrier until I read Dancin' Dave last article. Ouch!

Keep 'em shiftin' smooth.

Well I am going after this again as the weather may actually allow a ride today. What I am confused is in the clips. I found the outer clip which pulls out but appears to to pressed into knuckle itself. Is there another clip under the felt that I can't see? I am trying to be careful but the felt washer damages quite easy when trying to look down each side. There must be another clip I am missing because it does not snap off with some extensive pressure. I was hoping for more info like step by step instructions. Clearly I am missing something because you all make it sound like it is a walk in the park. I have the lower off and it is still a mess in there and acccess is poor at best. If one of you who has performed this can enlighten me I would appreciate it. And it is required to remove the center bracket right. And if so before or after trying to take the trans linkage loose.Thanks--------------Rethy

There is only one clip per ball joint, once you push the clip off the ball joint the lift the clip straight out, once the clip is out you can pry the ball joint off with a flat screwdriver. You also loosen the black bracket with a 10 mm wrench and 4 mm allen, pull the bolt out and clean, replace the bolt and put a bit of threadlock on the nut and reassemble. This is the hardest part due to location of the bolt. clean all the ball joints, put a good quality grease in the joint and reassemble, reinsert the clips and you are done.

Rethy,

There is a circlip that is part of the ball receptacle. After you have removed the safety clip (flip up and pull out) it does take a bit of force to pop the unit off. Some times I use a screw driver to help it along. As long as the safety clip is out pull away with out fear.

I have found it hard to put the safety clips back in with out compressing the ball joint into the felt a bit. This takes a bit of strength and dexterity. Practise with the parts out of the bike so you get a feel for it.
