So Brian,
what was the final outcome of your valve adjustment? How many buckets did you end up replacing? Did you check valve clearance again after you got everything torqued? Were the clearances as expected?

Here is the skinny on my valves. Originally 3 intake gaps read .005in. I later looked at my bmw manual and it said .005 was in tolerance..... So no valves actually HAD to be adjusted. I was able to swap 2 of the 3 buckets around and only needed to buy one. But since I was going to the dealer for one, I figured I would adjust all intake and exhaust to mid range. So that meant 6 of 8 intake and 2 of 8 exhaust needed adjustment. After swapping buckets around I ended up needing 4 new buckets but mistakingly bought 5. 6 of the intakes now read .007 and 2 read .008. All 8 exhaust now measure .011. After reinstalling the cams and sprockets I hand turned the engine via the rear tire to make sure I had no valve piston interference. Several revolutions thru and I rechecked the gaps. same as stated above. Put the fuel tank back on(with quick disconnects) added fuel and she started within a few seconds and sounds great!!!!! Thanks again for the help

Brian, you done good boy! The numbers you now have are close to ideal. FYI, .005" is NOT within limits! It is too tight and does need to be adjusted, which you did. The minimum clearance for the intake valves is .006". You could let that value pass if there was only one or two and you really did not desire to remove the cam till the next check. But you would probably want to plan on changing those buckets on the next visit for sure.
Ain't it great to her the fat lady sing after you've operated on her? Even better if you had a bunch of your best buddies messing with her innards under the guise of experts!
Hopefully it will be less intimidating for the next 12K Inspection. Plus you probably have a few extra buckets now!

Very cool. I think it was good to get them mid range instead of good enough. I bet your next several valve checks are just that, checks with no adjustment required.:)
attached is a cut and paste from the manual to confirm what John said and assure you the .005 was not in tolerance.
Really glad that you got it all in although it could have meant another trip to come up there.

Gentleman,
This is weird, Your attached gif and the internet guide we used both said .006. My workshop manual (on CD) says .005???? Well, The way I look at it is that mine are really good now and I learned how to do it!!!!! Oh yeah, And I have all that BEER that never got drunk...... When I finally have her fully assembled and the new farkles wired, I think I will crack open a few and just listen to her purrrrrrr.....

I woke up this morning and the sun was shinning. So I decided it was time to see how she runs since the checkup. By the time I put the windshield back on and geared up, It was pouring rain and very windy. Oh well im going,,,,
WOW is all I can say. You know that buzz most of us have at certain RPM's, I had it pretty bad. Key word here is had. 90 percent gone. Smooth thru the whole powerband. Its like a new bike!! The best she has ever run. I did not notice much difference with the new throttle cable in the garage. But out on the road the difference was incredible. So much easier and smoother throttle operation, Very well worth converting to the 05 throttle cable. The cruise control works perfectly also. I was so impressed I gave her a thorough bath.
Thanks again for the help gentlemen, You do fine work!!

Glad to hear that she runs great Brian! And let us remember that we who you say "do fine work" were instrumental in tearing her apart, but most of the reassembly was done by yours truly! So you Brian, must "do fine work" as well!
Now just try to remember it all so you can in turn pass it on to someone else in your neck of the woods when it is their turn! Besides, it makes a great excuse to get together and visit! We all enjoyed your great hospitality.
Ernie, I think you started something good up here in the Great Northwest buddy!

Look on page 00.68 in your CD manual.
From my post in the other thread:
Page 00.68 gives the correct conversion of MM to Inch, Page 11.47 has it incorrect. 0.15MM=0.0059", 0.20 MM=.0079" Looks like they properly rounded the numbers on page 00.68, but just truncated them on page 11.47.

Thanks for looking that up Dave, I would always prefer to over due it instead of under due it. I am just surprised Bmw made that typo. I will remember how to do the valves, And I have 5 buckets availeable for the next tech session...

It is my pleasure. I only wish I could have made it up to Brian's session. It sounded like so much fun. http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

12k service at dealer, valve check .
Inlet 15 / 15 /20 /20 /20 /20 /20 /20 .
Exhaust 30 /30 /30 /30 /30 /30 /30 /30 .
Do you think the two at 15 on the inlet will need changing at 24k .
04 graphite
in Blighty. (spring at last ).

I would definetly check them again at 24k. My bet is that they do need changing. You have 12k miles to look into the procedure. Its actually very easy especially with the help of this forum and its members. I was lucky enough to have a bunch of local experts to guide me through it.

LT local is WAY different from Harley local. Same as SoCal freezing is different from Detroit freezing. :D :D :D
It was freezing here yesterday. 41 degrees on the way to work! Heat waves in the middle of the country, and we get this in San Diego???

Gee Ken, I think local for you is anything within 24 hours from home. Am I right? :D
BTW: It sure is good to be back on the Left Coast. Florida ia a great place to visit.

I only wish I had my LT down there, but then again that would have taken time away from snorkling with stingrays. Bummer, huh? :D
