I have just bought my first BMW. A 1999 LT with 4500 miles. I am attempting to hook up my Sirrius Sat Radio and don't know if the usual FM transmission to the antenna will be adequate. The FM transmission is sometimes overriden or runs into a pile interference when I run it in my pickup. There is a nice coupling next to the gas tank to tap in where the rear antenna lead attaches to the radio. Is there a product to insert in the line that I could bring down the output feed line from the radio dock ? Would it be similar to the one I have in the house? That out simply plugs directly into the jacks in the stereo. I rarely have listened to the radio but I thought I would give a shot as long as I have it available.

You need to use the antennae supplied with the radio. I have mine installed on the left handle bar using the Hoon Hardware mount. The radio clips in and the antennae rests right behind it. When I hardwire it, I'm either going to tap into the maplight or run the power wire to the powerlet plug. The FM modulator works like a charm even in NYC.

I bought the mount from Cyclegadgets:http://www.cyclegadgets.com/

The picture shows an XM radio but the mount works for the Sirius Starmate Replay.

Some others have mounted the radio on a BMR shelf and have run the antennae on to a grounding plate that attaches to the rear antennae. My solution has worked for two years without a hitch.

If you search the Sat. Radio forum you'll find a picture of this setup.

Welcome to the board!

I believe what you're referring to is called an FM direct adaptor,
I had one on my 2002 it plugged into the antenna connection underneath the stingray and the side of the XM/Sirius unit,
you'll probably find more info on it in the satalite radio section of this forum

I just checked the Sirius website. I don't think that FM direct adaptor works for the Sirius radioes. If it does, I'm in. But it wasn't listed there. The Amazon website only indicates that it is for XM.

While what is Amazon won't work for XM, this (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-6HiywYenlsS/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=251550&I=60714110) will. ;) You just got to know how to surf the Internet.

FYI, this unit is listed as "not available" on your link. :(

Brett,
There are a bunch of these hanging on a rack by the Auto Audio area of my local Circuit City.

I also found one on the Sirius website.
http://shop.sirius.com/edealinv/servlet/ExecMacro?nurl=control/StoreItem.vm&ctl_nbr=2640&siId=1998401&catParentID=7872&scId=7872

Or, shop Sirius Accessories for FMDA25

That's what I'm putting on my LT at 24k service.

This will transmit DIRECTLY into the antenna of the radio.... it will "disconnect" the external antenna so you don't have any fade problems... and quality if much better.

Don't forget to "seal" the unit with a good RTV sealant or your own "method"... it is NOT intended to get wet.

As the other responders said, the adapter works very well.

In Sirius land, the device is called "FM Relay". It is very inexpensive (between $10 and $20) and connects to the FM output of your Sirius receiver.

On antenna side, it has a standard antenna socket and a pigtail cable. You will have to disconnect the antenna cable coupler under the left side of the stingray and simply insert the "Relay" in-line.

When Sirius receiver is powered up, the relay disconnects off-the-air antenna and feeds its radio signal directly into your radio receiver. All you have to do is set the frequency to match the relay's.

If you want to listen to regular broadcast radio, you will have to turn the Sirius receiver off in order to disengage the relay.

It is all very simple and very reliable. I have 3 Sirius-equipped vehicles and all of them use FM relays - the easiest method to have a good quality interface.

As a hint: it is quite tight under the stingray. I placed the relay under the seat (wrapping it with waterproof tape). The pigtail was too short, so I extended it with a short length of RG-174 coax. In a pinch, you can use any coax cable and the splice can be quite crude: it is only a receiving antenna, therefore impedance matching is not really a concern.

Good luck!

Channing, I haven't figured out what I am going to do. I have the Sirius Starmate receiver (that is used in the car and hard-wired) and would like to have it installed on the LT. The mount, antenae and dc connection.

I am not one of those guys that can rig stuff up and make it work!

I may run the bike by either Circuit City or Best Buy and see if they can rig it up on the bike.

Why not just plug it in to the Voice II directly in an aux port? I installed mine by using industrial strength hook and loop on the left handle bar for the antenna. The Sirius unit, I put in the oddments box so it away from weather. The cords are run under the tupperware to my fuse box (using a cigarette lighter adaptor). it is now out of sight and away from weather, but still reachable to change the stations.

Don't let the guys at CC pull the tupperware...and that's required.

Get the part then at the next "Tech Session" get some help doing the plug in.. or ask someone to give you a hand, I'll bet you won't have any trouble getting help...

I was leary of having CC or Best Buy do it but I figured they would know more than I.

Maybe I can call on my buddy Don (bamalt), maybe he knows what I need to buy and how to do it!

Hey Don.................................................... :o
