Ok here is the deal. I'm stuck on/with my new toy, the 2730.

For my learning test, I am routing from the gps and not the computer.

Route. From Bellevue Wa to Boise Id.

No problem, it routes me across I-90, over I-82, and down I-84 to Boise. Yea!

But what I really want to do is bypass a part of I-82 with a short twisty road called Canyon Road or HWY 821, that begins just where I-90 meets I-82 and parallels I-82 along the Yakima river for a few miles.

For the life of me I can not convince the machine to add/edit/change/morf that part of the route. Any ideas. For those in the know, it is a 5 min test... First correct answer wins a bottle of seattle micro brew ups'd to your door.

I'm also learning how to use the 2730, my first GPS. I only know to make a series of way point (towns), to force it to take you off the main road and onto the wanted route. A few miles before a way point town I pick the next town, and cancel the current town. This is the method I used to work my way around the back roads of GA going to the CCR.

All done from the GPS - no computer!

1. Assuming your at home

2. Route to your desired destination - home (your current location to the desired location)

3. Add a Waypoint to the route where the intersection is on the road you want to turn on. You can add and remove Wayoints / Favorites / Midpoints / Vias. to any route you have stored or are just setting up on the unit. See Page 17 of the 2730 manual. Touch Edit / Review Points, Touch Add or click on a Waypoint you previously added.

4. Add more Waypoints along the route you desire

5. After you are done you can even reorder the Waypoints

If you do not have the manual you can download free from Garmin here:

Ok I'll send a bottle to each of you just because you are both in a late time zone and really should have been in bed for this one. Here is what I found out after reading your responses.

The GPS unit works differently from the mapsource on the computer (which I and played with at length at first.) On the computer I can put a single waypoint at a small town somewhere in the middle of the desired new road and the routing changes to this new route. However on the gps unit I must put three (possibly 2 if I get creative) to get it to force over.

Hmmmm. Not convenient or intuitive at the momemt. But possibly would allow for more quick off shoots in my game plan on the road without major restructuring of the route. How's that for a cup half full. But odd it is different than the computer.

Shoot me your address guys and I will make full on the deal. Thanks.

Ken,
I had the same problems you are having when I first bought my gps. I hated it because it would always route me on straight boring freeways. Barnett and Dan have you on the right track. Use all waypoints instead of via points. You will love your gps when you get used to it. Its a pain to make all those waypoints but its worth it. I usually bring my laptop with on trips because its easier and the larger screen really helps finding better twisties. I even break it out on the side of the road sometimes if I want to alter my route significantly. We should get together for some riding this spring.

Dang and I really wanted the brews. I was going to and still would suggest adding a via point or more to get your there by your selected route. I'm still getting used to my 2610, but via points seem to work easier for me than waypoints for routing.

To more accurately create a waypoint while your Garmin is on your bike you might want to consider using the remote control. You will find that you can move the pointer with a greater degree of accuracy by using the "mini joystick" on the remote. Push the joystick in, then move the vehicle pointer to the position you want and make a waypoint. Obviously, do this at a rest stop not while moving.
