I see several threads on various mount ideas for the GPS, but has anyone actually used the mount just above the radio on the 06? I can't figure out what additional hardware is required to mount the unit here. Any advice deeply appreciated.

You have described exactly what I have...06LT and Garmin 2730 attached where yours is. Tomorrow, I am meeting with some smarter, more experienced motorcycle maintenance men who are going to show me how to take the tupperware off my bike. While we are doing that, I'll take a picture or two of all the hardware that connects my Garmin to the bike. Maybe the pictures will help. I'll hope for that anyway. We'll see.

I had an 2610 mounted "OEM-style" in my '00 LT. I used industrial-grade 3M Dual-Lock glued onto the radio control pod (similar stuff to that used to attach EZ-Pass transponders to windshields).
The Garmin motorcycle bracket is attached to a generic cell-phone tilt adapter, available at any automotive installer. Dual lock strips are glued to the bottom of the cell-phone adapter.
See attached pix of the control pod and of receiver bracket.
Unfortunately, I cannot show you the complete assembly - I did not get a chance yet to install it onto my current bike.
This is a surprisingly solid installation. The GPS receiver does not shake or swivel and it takes quite a bit of effort to separate the Dual-Lock attachments.
As you'll notice, I've got really fancy and prior to installation cut the strips to allow the BMW logo button to poke through. The radio control head is not completely flat, but it did not seem to cause any trouble: there is enough give in the Dual-Lock.
Hope this helps.

My '06 came with the BMW mount and the wiring to connect a GPS and I had a Garmin 2610. I could not figure out exactly how the BMW mount was supposed to work so I purchased a RAM mount (less than 10 bucks as I recall) for the 2610 and fabricated a plastic interface to bolt it to the BMW mount. The 2610 snaps in and works perfectly. I have attached a picture that shows what I did.

My 06 came with that bmw mount and the wiring. I ordered and installed the motorcycle mount from Garmin and it lines up exactly with the mount and my 2720. I have not wired the audio to the intercom yet but so far the video only has been adequate for my needs.
