Hi beemer people; I just pruchased a 1985 K100RT and drove it 1 mile so far; when I got off, my impression was; "wow!, i feel like I just got off a rocket" I cannot believe the power this bike has, can't wait to drive it this spring, it's now 10 below 0 here in Maine. I have owned BSA's, Norton's, and TRiumph,s for many years and have never had the oppurtunity to drive a BMW, I'm amazed over this bike;l I will leave my Triumph parked this summer and just drive it to the antique show in September. lots of good stuff on this site; amd will learn alot about beemers so I can tinker with them myself.......I'm just rambling....than ks and bye.

Welcome aboard, Steve. What a sweet ride you have there. I've got a friend or two that also owns a coupla of 'em (they neither one have the Laminar Lip add-on at the windshield like yours, tho) and they have put miles and miles on 'em and love 'em. There is an independent wrench in San Antonio that knows the ins and outs of those model bikes and enjoys workin' on 'em.

When you can get out and put some miles on yours, ride safe. Folks around here will be watchin' for your evaluation posts, I'm sure.

Best Regards.

Hi Steve,
congrats on your purchase. Does the previous owner have documentation on when the final drive splines were last lubed? If not I would suggest removing the rear wheel and final drive to inspect and lube these splines. This is about the only weakness these old bikes have. Mine is just broke in at 60K.

If you are into doing your own maintenance I would suggest looking at the BMW MOA K-bike technical pages. There is a LOT of good info from a lot of very experienced people.

You know that was a fine looking bike back then and it still is 22 years later. Enjoy the ride.

Steve, welcome.

I love your old RT. In fact I'm an absolute fan of the early K's of BMW. I still run my '83 base K100 as often as I can.

It's great advice about the drive shaft lube. It's most important. Please let me know if you'd like to perform this task yourself. It's easy. I recently did mine for the first time and throughly enjoyed learning how to do it. I took comprehensive digital images of the procedure. I would be delighted to send you the images if they would be of use to you. Let me know by email.

Cheers, kindest regards, enjoy and take care of that lovely classic K.

Welcome Steve. When you get the official nod from Dick, life is indeed good here! A nicer guy you're not gonna find...

My Sainted Mother told me never to ask the following question but I have to - how much did you pay for your gently used ride? Miles too?

Before I graduate to a nice shiny new BMW, I want to earn my stripes with one of these classic bikes with a bit of character.

Congrats on the purchase and ride safely!

David

Steve,

We also have a '85 K100RT. This is a fabulous bike. Easy to maintain. I love the seating position. See pix below....

Evening,
I paid 1500.00 for the bike in november; also bought a new rear tire mounted on a spare original rim for 90.00. I've only driven the bike 3 miles so far, it's 18 today in Maine...

Welcome aboard Steve and Congratulations!

My 1987 K100RS is now being ridden by my stepson. I owned it from new and took really good care of it. It still goes like stink and he is just keeping up the tradition, although some parts are being replaced as needed. You'll enjoy the ride more and more as you rack up the miles on it. At that price, what more can I say?

Ride safe and keep well.

Glad to see this thread. I'm a long-time motorcyclist (ca. 35 years) and now a first time BMW rider. While at home on a sick day a few weeks ago I found a 1985 K100RS on the website of a dealer about 150 miles from home.

I called the dealer, we talked off and on for a couple of days, and I bought it.

The dealer owned the bike, and before putting it up for sale he installed new tires, brakes, battery, radiator fan motor, all new rubber hoses and gaskets, ground the valves, and lubed the splines on both ends. What at sweet ride for $2,300!

It is missing the side covers (the ones just below the driver's seat) on both sides. Does anyone know where I might purchase a set?

Thanks.

Hi Steve,

You got a good deal on both the bike & the spare part. If you haven't done
so, check out the BMWMOA.org website & start making it to the rallies.
After the snow melts of course. :)

IBMWR also is a good source for tech info. I used thier tips to simplify lubing the rear splines on my K75RT.
