View Full Version : Laser Shifting/Jamming and the KLT

A number of states have banned the laser [active] jamming equipment (Escort calls it 'shifting'). Has anyone on this site actually installed any laser 'shifting' equipment on a motorcycle? Brand, problems, etc.

There appear to be some that lend themselves well to motorcycle installation. Of course this is so that I may practice safe(r) riding techniques!

You have to remember that when a LEO cannot take a reading with a radar of any sort, he is still entitled to give you an award based on his perception of your speed. Many courts consider the officer to have received enough training and experience to guesstimate your speed without a device of any sort.

As a retired Highway Patrol Sgt. your assertion to the guesstamate is correct for only some states but Florida isn't one of them. They have to use calibrated and tested equipment such as radar, laser,or calibrated speedo for over a 1/4 mile. they're "expert" or trained opinion cannot be the only basis for a speeding ticket here. By the way the states that do except that testimony, do only if you are trained by a state certified instructor and pass that certification within + or - 5 miles per hour which is always deducted by the judge to be fair. It's called an independent speed estimation. I totally disagree with it. Law enforcement has enough tools to play with and needs no more power to accomplish it's goals. Speeding fines are a joke and a money maker for the states, just another tax!

Quite candid and I might add a bit refreshing. If it were just a tax it would indeed simplify things, however, everyone wants to jump in on the revenue. To include, of course, the insurance companies. Beacon scores, education level, traffic violations, age, accidents, of course all contribute to the 'money pot'. Add to the discriminatory if not inconsistent application of the law and it's a mess. So, while I occasionally break the limit, more often to extricate myself from a dangerous traffic mess, I know that I will be cut no slack by a law enforcement officer.

I do intend to see what this is all about. It has gotten rave reviews...Scandanavian company I believe. http://blinder.net/

It is amazing how many variables are tied to speeding fines. I do believe that most law enforcement "believe" the are preventing accidents and saving lives as they are constantly told, trained and convinced of. They start young and are impressionable thus easy to mold. Five, ten, or fifteen over does not cause an accident. In some cases it could be argued to death about reaction time, and closing distances to an accident. I have seen thousands of accidents w/ many deaths. Speed played a part in some % but it was usually coupled w/ alchohol and lack of skill. Extra speed doesn't help when it all goes wrong but it usually doesn't cause it. Lets face it you can run fifteen miles per hour it's not much!! Speeding is a cottage industry in Fla. from the fines to insurance hikes, lawyers, court fees and my all time favorite in Fla. "just pay the fine plead nole contendre and they assign no guilt or points". So it is just about the money trust me! I've traveled the whole country and have never, outside of California, seen more enforcement of speeding. It's insane here and law enforcement does believe they are doing the right thing. But your right you probably won't be cut any slack they "believe" here!! Just venting! Most all law enforcement are good men and women just doing a job. But unfortunatley they don't look at the big picture or explore their opinion in this one regard, they are part of the machine just listening to their Sgt. or Major .

Hi John,

This thread seems to have drifted a bit....

I have installed one of these systems on a bike - Ninja. I can't say for sure that it kept me from being ticketed, but I did pass a few speed traps 10-15 over the limit without being bothered.

I would never push it past that- both for my safety and the fact that they could get you for careless or reckless.

If you get one on the LT, be sure to post your install. I asked about this months back and didn't get much response. I was going to install one of the built in radar detectors, and possibly a Blinder. Changed my mind based on the cost and went with a detector with a radar screamer.

Good luck,
Tim

Hi, Tim. Yep, it's called thread hijacking.

Hey, I see FtC police now have laser and are using it alot. Watch out over on Taft Hill Rd at Blevins JHS. Also, Larimer County Sheriff was on 285 south bound at the new Walmart construction site yesterday with laser catching folks going through the construction zone. In both cases, my escort 8500 never beeped. I'm thinking very seriously about updating to a Blinder or similar along with Stealth Veil paint on the license plates and headlight buckets for the Super Focus. And no, I didn't contribute to the speeding funds in either case.

I think the laser jammer/shifter would work well on the LT. However, the Laser Veil may not be as effective on the LT. You might want to check out http://www.speedzones.com/laser_detection_and_id.html and http://www.1-radar-laser-jammers-detectors.com/our-store/veil-stealth-coating/details.php

Hi there, in reply to your query

I have done a complete install of a SR7 escort remote radar unit with jammers, i feel it works great. takes a while, fabrication of mounting bracket have to do a major strip of body plastic, top box etc. end result very suttle, front jammers 2 of them point out of the BMW style grille holes in front fairing, rear jammer mounted to rear lic plate bolts, radar unit mounted at map light area, sound wired into harness in left handle bar which goes into right ear set only of intercom system. only concern is the volume on the radar has to be set a little too loud to activate the com system, just finished the com system portion this winter. have had it installed for over a year. saved my but a few times for sure. at the speed i travel i need all the help i can get. if you want some help let me know. if it is a concern i have a 2002 LT

Many courts consider the officer to have received enough training and experience to guesstimate your speed without a device of any sort.

In this neck of the woods, leos are trained to use the radar as a confirmation AFTER a visual observation (and doppler audio shift from the radar head unit) of speed in excess of the posted limit. Most agencies have forward and rear facing radar antenna horns mounted inside the patrol units for both stationary and moving speed assessment. We are told to not use the automatic "lock on" option and to not drive with the unit actively on all the time; other agencies drive and spray until the excessive speed alarm in the head unit goes off. There are many acceptable PCs for a traffic stop. We are TESTED on visual speed estimation during radar certification and must pass not only a written exam, but also the standard for 20 visual observations / correct estimations. My first radar certification was in 1979 and the last in 2006. Some leos enjoy the paperwork; and some of us do not! :bmw:

(Yes, I have received a number of speeding tickets ... and used most all of the detectors on the market - even the ones that you built yourself back in the 1970s ... currently preference is the Passport 8500x50 for size / mounting / range /warnings and my wife liked her solo ... too bad it doesn't work when it is turned off - my last citation!)

Interestingly, my only ticket, which I gave a lawyer money and it went away, was most unfair. But then again, like the movie, "The Chamber", I was guilty many times where I was not caught. In this instance there was road construction on both sides of a highway. Construction ceased, months ago and the 55 mph limit signs were removed on ONE side, but not the other. I was the only one on the road and tried to explain to the FHP but he was intent on ticketing me 65 in a 55 mph zone, even tho' it was clearly in error. I only presented my case, did not argue. Which could have made it worse.

The Blinder has sensors both in the rear and forward. A warble like audio will play thru my headset (Autocom ProAVI) There are multiple channels and so will the Valentine V1, in the event both are being used. Truthfully, I am not much of a speeder. This is more a project for 'fun' rather than necessity. BTW, it will go on my K1200GT, not the LT or R12GS.

Still awaiting a few crucial parts to install on the GT. Will expect completion in a week or so!
