How do you get the mounting hardware to mount the garmin 2610 to mount in the map light area? How do you go about doing it? I saw a 2006 bike with the gps mounted there and thought it was a neat place.

BMW Part 99990000583

http://www.bmwlt.com/gallery/files/5/5/8/IMG_14801.jpg

Just checked a dealer and it is pricey ($200) but it comes with:

BMW K1200LT motorcycle mount
Remote antenna from Garmin (GA 26c) - BNC connector
BMW Navigator power/audio cable
Instructions

Bought mine in 2003 for $100 :D

Good Luck . . .

Just for clarification and an FYI; The BMW GPS mount changed with the '05 model. Pre-'05 mounts came through the map light. After that, they mounted to the stingray. It sounds like you're wanting the pre-'05 mount.

Fairly easy/quick to install. You just need to remove the windshield and Tupperware under the shield (IIRC, 7 screws), attach the bracket than reassemble. There's a hidden screw inside the maplight hole than many miss. That's also the same screw that holds the GPS bracket in place.

Does anyone have a picture of this installation? It sounds to me like this is the perfect solution from a cosmetic/ease of wiring standpoint. I would love to hear your opinions if you have or considered this type of install.

For less than the $200 quoted price of the BMW mount you could purchase a BMR Co-Pilot shelf, the Garmin Motorcycle cradle and the slotted bracket required to attach the cradle to the shelf. You'll get the same "heads up" location for your GPS, plus it will stop the problem of dash lights reflecting on the windshield. You can also mount other accessories on the shelf.

Raffy carries the BMR products. Here's a link: http://motogear4you.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=17

Back when I chose the BMW mount over the shelf type unit it wasn't a matter of cost it was a matter of clutter. Just could not warm up to a flat box looking tray - did not seem to flow with the design of the bike. I admit there are some benefits to the shelf and it does add to a cockpit type feel with all the instruments - very techie. However lucky for us today the number of devices that need to be mounted are becoming less and less with the advent of the new GPS units taking on more duties - XM, MP3, Weather, Traffic and Bluetooth (Phone). Can't imagine radar is on the horizon . . .

Back to the price for a moment - I did try to enter the information into Chicago BMW parts pricer (20% discount) but it did not hit. Another online dealer kicked back the price of $200. Do not see why this part would go up 100% in just 3 to 4 years but then again this is BMW - I would still see what Chicago would sell for.

Just my 3 cents!!

I fabricated my own mount from aluminum angle. It mounts to the tubular frame behind the front fairing and to the screw behind the map light. It comes out through the map light hole. It required drilling one small hole behind the map light, but you can't see it. I ran power from the map light circuit, ran the XM antenna wire from the rear of the bike under all the Tupperware and out the map light hole. I used a Radio Shack cassette adaptor and ran wiring under Tupperware and out the map light hole. When using the GPS (Garmin 2730) I just push the button for the cassette player and I have XM radio, MP3 and the audio from the GPS coming out the bike's speakers. I'll get you some pictures in the near future. Hopefully they will help you.

I'd like to see pics of these installations. After putting mine on the stingray, I don;t like how it blocks the idiot lights, because idiots like me need to see that blinker light and others. So I need to move it up. Not wild about hte BMR shelf, since the GPS is all that I need up there. ANd I have access to a full fab shop here at work. I am thinking about a simple bracket to move it up. May make a wider one to block the reflections, though. That is a good idea. I hate to do it, but could screw directly to the plastic up there. Just needing some ideas here. Do you lose the dash light? I have actually used it a couple times.

I looked at the ebay bracket. Not sure exactly how it mounts up. I fiddled with mine last night and held it up in new places. Liked nothing. Like it on stingray, but was blocking both rows of lights. I got to remembering that someone said they used the simple oval mount that came with the 2610 and I tried it and it lowers the unit enough to see the top row of lights and part of the bottom, if placed all the way to the rear of the radio ledge. SO that's what I'm trying now. affixed with supplied double layer of double sided tape. We'll see how this works. At any rate, with the GPS off, I can see all my idiot lights (yep I'm an idiot).

Still searching for the perfect solution for me.....

This has been debated many times over, there are advantages and disadvantage to just about every position you can mount a GPS,

I've had mine above the map light (2002 LT stock mount) the advantage is that it is close to your line of sight, you can still see the road ahead while you're "fiddling" with the GPS
The disadvantage is the "reach" and with the sun behind you it is difficult to see so you'll probably need a sunshield also.

The stingray mount on my 2005 LT is an easier reach, but you take your eyes "further" of the road, there is also the sun behind you issue but I've learned that I can use my head to make "shade" enabling me to see the screen.

The left handle bar mount partially blocks the mirror and with the right handlebar mount you can only "adjust" the GPS while the bike is stopped or on cruise.

It's up to you to pick the "lesser evil" or the inconvenience that you can live with.
I'm in agreement regarding the "flat shelf" I don't like how it looks and that's the reason I don't have one on my bike, but I have to admit from a convenience perspective it's probably the best solution.

I was trying to figure out how far back I'd have to mount it to use the cradle last night and to allow the unit to be removeable with the shield down, it seems to need to come back a good distance. Like you said, it's whatever suits each rider. I don;t want it on bars. Going to try what I got for now. Have to take a couple rides and see. It's lower without the cradle now. I can see the turn sig indicators, which is a big reminder for me in town, where it doesn't get a 1/4 mile to cancel.

I have grown accustomed to the gear indicator and it is partially blocked, but I can still move and see it.

Thanks
Randy

There is a picture of my SP-III which uses the mount along with a pic of the actual mount installed.

I went with the BMR shelf option for a 2610 install, see pics here (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=95725&postcount=18) because I didn't like the stingray mount for same reasons, I like to see the all the lights etc on the dash!
Benefits of getting it up to and above the map light were:
1) ease of getting power through map-light
2) better line-of-sight, without taking eyes off road so much
3) at night the shelf blocks the light-glare from the windshield
4) it gives me somewhere to stick my e-tag for tolls.
5) my tank bag doesnt get in the way of it
It isn't such a bad option, and you get used to it very quickly!
