Hey everyone,

I own a 05 K1200LT and abosolutely love it. I can imagine getting rid of it. I'm considering adding a new K1200GT to the garage to have more fun on solo riding.

I have been to Daytona twice this year and visited the BMW tent to ride the new bikes. I could not get on the 1 GT last spring, but I did when I went back this fall.

This trip was through some twisty neighborhood roads and some 35-45mph straights, no highway this time. The GT that I rode had the standard seat in the low position, where the front of the seat is lower in the front and high in the back. Well in this position, it really aggravated my lower back. I loved everything about the GT, but that seating position really bothered my lower back. When I got back to the trailer, I asked the BMW rep about the seat. He raised the seat and had me sit back on it. The raised position was much better. BTW I'm 37, 5'10", 175lbs with a 32" inseam. The handle bars were about halfway up on the adjustment.

My question, does anyone else have an issue with the seating position, high or low on the GT? Has anyone replaced their seat with something else if it was a problem? Did adjusting the handlebar height help? I have not tried one with the low seat option to see if that makes a difference. There is one coming to my local dealer in March, I will try it then and see if that makes a difference.

I feel it's a slight adjustment needed somewhere. I may need to just limber up somehow before riding the GT. I also may not be used to the sportier position, I have always ridden 2 wheeled barcalounger touring bikes; 1990 Honda Pacific Coast, 1993 Wing, 2003 Wing, 2005 LT most of my life.

Any suggestions or advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hey Dave,

First of all, the stock seat sucks and gets real hurtful real fast. I had mine redone by Kontour, others have used Rocky, Rick, etc.

Try sitting on the bike with the small of your back rounded towards the back of the bike. You'll be amazed. You were prolly riding with your back arched forward (which also puts pressure on your wrist's) and stomache pooched out.

I'm 50 years old, ride with the handlebars all the way down, the seat in it's top position and this bike is comfortable for me.

This is my 3rd different model of BMW and the first one that I was compelled to get a after market seat. You could probably get a piece of scrap carpet and throw it over the frame and have more comfort than what BMW gave us. Good luck with your seat search, the bike is worth the added expense of a good seat.
I went with Russell.
