I have been following the news in Boston about this advertising scheme that turned the city upside down. Curious about other's thoughts?

Mine:
I know I / we don't live there and are Monday Morning Q.B'ing but I think the city of Boston went WAY over the top on this thing. Once they determined the first one or two of these things were toys and not a bomb or even a fake bomb they should have shut it down. Nine other cities had the same thing and nothing was said or done. I think they are pushing the prosecution of the two guys and the ad agency just because they went to far initially and now they can't save face. What was the intent of the ad agency? Were they advertising or trying to scare the $hit out of people? What is the element of any crime if there was one? Dumb idea maybe, but look at the advertising Time Warner is getting out of it. The Million they are paying back to Boston is a drop in the bucket compared to the free publicity their show is getting. I know I had never heard about it till this.

My final thought is: It is what it is, an advertising ploy, not a hoax, not a terroristic act, and certainly no crime was committed.

Are you talking about the flipping bird signs?

I had a really good laugh about the stupidity of public officials. The only ones that want publicity here are the officials and noone else. C'on, I mean if soeone was concerned about one of the signs (the first one) I *MAY* be able to understand it, although in all honesty, I really don;t believe terrorists would be stupid enough to place bombs that are brightly lit and say: "here I am"

If the whole thing prooves something then only that Boston has a bunch of ....... in offcial ranks.

I think the official reacted way out of line. And news media was no better. I was watching Good Morning America yesterday and the person reporting the news said something like: 'They terrorized an entire City.'. Come on please you have got to be kidding me. And to charge the guys that put them up with Breach of Peace and Disorderly Conduct. Totally out there.

At least, we as a group, know not what to do when in Boston. I can just see the hotel at CCR this year, though.

I agree that "totally overblown" and "civic leader paranoia" pretty much describe my reactions. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) this episode reinforces my firm belief that many (notice: not "all") of our leaders have taken the fear of something bad happening to ridiculous lengths. In his "You Are All Diseased" comedy CD, George Carlin hits it right on the head with his rant about airline safety procedures, etc.

<dang; I need to go for a ride now>
