G'day all

Been hearing this clunk sound when I take off first time and have finally tracked it down to the rear disc. You can move the disc a couple of millimetres each way. I removed the rear wheel on the weekend and found that the disc is sort of riveted, so no way to tighten up the movement.

Any hints please? The brute is an 04 LT (Impala Brown, the colour discerning BMW riders choose :rotf: ) Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks all and ride safe.

The clunking sound may be normal if you are using non-BMW pads that do not come with the anti-rattle springs. Disconcerting at first but not a problem otherwise. I got that with the EBC pads.
The disc is a floating type so some play is normal.

Hi, David - ole Toad does that 'clunkity' sound also, butt only on the first take off start of a ride. In our case, it is the ABS unit cycling thru it's check program. Any subsequent ride away after a stop doesn't enable the clunk sound. If ole Toad is shut down and then re-started, we'll get the clunkity sound again, at first rideaway.

Not sure if that is what you're hearing. The rear wheel brake rotor is a floating unit and will have some small measurement of play, butt should not provide the clunkity sound ONLY at first takeoff.

Thanks Zippy & Dick for your responses. AFAIK the pads are still the OEM ones as I have only travelled 12k kilometres (poor I know, the Minister of War keeps a tight rein, too much work to do on the weekends to go riding  ).

Appreciate the feedback. BTW, happy 100th post to me too, cracked the Senior Member ranking yay me :histerica

I’m a die hard BMW enthusiast but the rear brake floating disk design is the poorest I have seen yet. It does in fact have some movement hence the name floating disk. However my 03 had developed the same clunk. Got so bad that on a rough roads or crush and run drives it would rattle. There was a recall but I was to late according to the dealer in Raleigh NC to get them to make good on it. We settled on parts at cost and free labor while I had the oil changed. The new disk was redesigned and hopefully will last a little longer. Good luck!

if you were dropping the clutch hard enough big dog, you shouldn't be hearing a clunk over the engine roar.... :histerica

BTW, its long overdue I found some time to head up the Central Coast for a ride (but not this weekend...). Maybe the MOW will let you out to play sometime!

Thanks for your words on your experience BMWROLLIN, hopefully it won't come to that for myself. A mate of mine had to get his ABS unit replaced on his '02 K1200S and was setting him back a healthy AUD$3K+ . Not happy Jan he is.

Chris, be good to catch up with you. I did drop the clutch once, the smell wasn't real flash and neither were the punches to the ribs from the MOW when I did it.

I see from your Ulysses number that your a new member  , welcome to the group mate. Like this list, they're a great bunch of people. I'm sure that you will have a great time. Which branch are you in?

Ride safe all.

There has been some discussion about the floating disc causing clunking noises. Somebody recommended replacing the disk with an EBC one (which I did and so far have had great results). Certainly the noise will get worse as the float increases but with the new EBC one fitted the silence is great. It took me an hour and a half to fit.

PS Use new pads

BTW, replaced my rear rotor about 6 months ago after it was scored (thanks BMW for picking up the tab) due to "too much float". The OEM replacement disks has no float at all!

Which branch are you in?Bit of a lone-wolf as far as pack riding, so no branch as yet... maybe I should become an honorary (distant) member of yours, eh el Presidente? ;)
Used to live on the CC for a number of years, and still have family up your way...
Will get in touch about a ride, maybe in a couple of weekends time... council cleanup this weekend, I have too much crap I need to throw away...!!!

cheers mate
