I came across a helmet lock (actually, 2 together) on a frame that replaces the license plate frame on the KLT. I seem to have lost the link and would be grateful if anyone could point it out to me.

Additionally, could anyone comment on what system they use, besides using the top box to hold the helmet(s). The top box is fine around town but when I am on the road and everything is loaded to the gills, I need to find an alternative. My old Hondas always seemed to have a helmet lock as standard issue. I am not keen about the BMW supplied "system".

Thanks for your input.

Zteknic makes one, available at your BMW dealer!

I have one of those and find it very convenient when traveling with loaded cases and nowhere to put the helmets.

Hello :
I just got my bike and I have been reading every website and even the owners manual.

There is a picture of the helmet lock holding two helmets on a steel cable with looped ends.
If you open up the seat it shows a place forward where the cable can hook onto.
So you hook one end run the wire through the face shields, with the two helmets bottom to bottom, and back to the hook.
Then you just close the seat and the helmets hang off the side.

Has anyone else had success with this?

PS.
On my old Honda there was a little bar that keyed open and closed next to the seat to hold the chin straps double D rings. Someone cut my expensive helmet off my bike anyway. Therefore I thought the BMW solution was much better.

Good Luck,

One of my bike buddies turned me on to a thin s.s. cable retractible lock with 4 twisty tumblers. I can lock my riding jacket (through the arms) and the helmet to the handlebars by weaving. The lock w/wound-up cable is no larger than a deck of cards and can be carried in your tank bag or pocket.

Keeps the honest folks honest. They are available in high-end bicycle shops for ~$20!

Hey Paul,

You're looking for the Helmet Guardian (http://www.cyclegadgets.com/products/product.asp?Item=GUARDIAN). It works purdy goot, but it will get nasty dirty back there when riding in that wet stuff. I eventually took mine off for that reason and used the posts and a couple of locks that fit in the mirror holes. You can get those at a Honda store.

I use the steel cable that came with bike. I also purchased a 6 foot long cable to run through the arms of our jackets. then attach it under the seat with the helmets cable. Now the jackets hide the helmets and keep them from the direct sun and the liquid sunshine.

It is a bit more expensive than the Helmet guardian pointed out by Grif but it works too...

I have one of these. Bought new, never used, can't remember what I paid for it but I'd sell it for a savings from retail if you want it.

PM if interested.

FYI, I remember paying close to $60.00 for the lock at Honda of Hollyweird.

interesting but what am i missing here?
it looks like you can just unscrew the license plate and steal yourself the plate and the helmet(s)

If someone really wants the helmets they will cut the straps and later replace them. In that sense there no good helmet locks. But it still beats leaving your helmets hanging on the antenna mast or grips, or just sittng on the bike.

Yes, it works as indicated, but it can become onerous to have to open the side case and raise the seat every time you park. Hence the everlasting search for a simple, secure helmet lock. PMitchel's thin s.s. retractable cable works for me. I run it through the empty mirror hole and lock it and retract it when I'm riding so I don't have to search for it when I stop. When I part the bike I can unlock it, pull the cable to full stretch, run it through a jacket sleeve, run it thru the helmet, lock it and walk away.

I use the BMW cable I found in my tool pack.

However, I found that I can put the cable through the helmets and set them on the back seat as opposed to hanging them down the side of the bike. Works great!
