Today, I discovered two TV programs. One has been around a while, but I just discovered, and the other is new as of today.
Dogfights - http://www.history.com/minisites/dogfights/
They recreate historical dogfights using high-tech animations and interviews with the pilots or other witnesses, along with first-hand accounts of the dogfights.
2057 - http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/2057/2057.html
It is a future view of the world in the year 2057. Very interesting. Some of it laughable, but other things are very interesting and plausable. The Orwellian aspect of some of the predictions are downright scary.

I'm watching it right now. Like you said, some of it is humorous but the medical insurance and treatment ideas are scary...
i.e How would you like your insurance cancelled because you partied the night before or they decided you weren't eating healthy enough. The grocery chains already track all of our purchases with those "club cards" How long until your HMO decideds they want access to that info???
Brave New World, here we come:(

I thought that was pretty interesting. Wait until the next episode ("City").
As for Dogfights, the episode where they described how the Yamato was sent against the Taffy3 carrier task group. The heroism of the crews of the US light cruisers that held off the Japanese fleet, sometimes alone against impossible odds, leaves me in awe. Of particular note was the story of the USS Johnston. Singlehandedly took on 5 ships, including the Yamato's sister ship (described as 30 times larger), and stayed in the fight long enough to save the remainder of the carrier group of Taffy3.

The Military channel has some good programs on...One such is Legends of Airpower. They did a show on Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, the first and only time I've seen him mentioned other than in a few WWII books. The man was positivly amazing...28 air to air kills in WWII flying the P-47 (a ground attack aircraft) and 6.5 kills in Korea in F-86's.
They have had several other interesting and little known persons in that show.
