I installed my CQ HID upgrade today and all I can say is wow! :sun:
I knew it would be better, but I didn’t expect it to be this good.

I have a couple of questions though.
When the key is first turned on and the light starts there is a humming sound while the lamp “warms up”. The hum dissipates and goes away within about 15 seconds. It seems to operate fine, but is this normal?

Also, When you start the bike, you turn the key on and the headlight fires, then you press the start button and the headlight goes off and then fires again. I know this is the normal sequence, but are we beating the crap out of the lamp-starter-ballast by asking it to fire twice in such a short span every time we start the bike? And, is there a solution?

Thanks to Grif for setting up the deal. :thumb:

I know this is the normal sequence, but are we beating the crap out of the lamp-starter-ballast by asking it to fire twice in such a short span every time we start the bike? And, is there a solution?I've had my HID on two LTs for 6 years and 120K miles. No problems at all with the startup sequence.

Thanks to Grif for setting up the deal. :thumb:Yep, thanks, Grif. :)

As all of us HID users have been saying for the past 4-5 years, yes, it IS that good.

The humming is the oscillator circuit in the ballast that drives the high voltage transformer. It develops around 1,500 volts A.C. to "strike" the arc, and stays at that voltage until the arc is stabilized and the arc chamber is up to temp, then the voltage drops back to around 85 volts A.C. sustained. As Ken said, perfectly normal.

I installed my HID yesterday but have a problem. I tested the light as suggested by Joe before I fully installed it and it worked fine. I finished the install and now the I get the hum, the light flickers a few time and goes out and stays off. What did I do wrong?

Ken, thanks for answering all my questions. :) Everything seemed fine, but It doesn't hurt to check with you guys before I blow something up.

Ray, I'm sure someone else here can advise you better than I can, but I guess the obvious thing would be to take it apart and check all the connections and polarity. I belive the system won't work if polarity is crossed. I tested mine several times throughout reassembly to make sure nothing came loose... and because I love looking at that light :D

Yes, you are correct. I forgot all the ballasts are made in other countries, so cannot be expected to know the words here in the US. :rotf:
