I'll be picking up the '99 K1200 LT this week; found the deal on cycletrader, rode it yesterday, and it's a nice bike. 18k miles and regularly serviced.
Any recommendations for a new BMW owner? I've got a 2000 Sporty and have done my own maintenance; I've started looking for the factory manual already.
Thanks,
Curt

Curt, welcome to the forum. You've already made two great choices (buying an LT and signing up with this group), so you're well on your way. I've got a '99 as well (2nd owner), but you got a cherry with only 18k! Just two recommendations to start with: ALWAYS have the handlebars straight and your head up when coming to a stop; and ride hard, but ride safe. If you use the Search function of this forum and put in something like "New owner," you will get a ton of threads where people talked about their new bikes and others responded (sometimes with useful information!) Enjoy the ride.

Welcome aboard! The LT is a fantastic machine and you will love every mile you ride on it.
The first item you should purchase is a low beam HID kit. There is a group buy going on through January 31 for about $85.00 delivered. A quick search should give you the details you need.
The stock headlight is a joke and many of us upgraded to the HID for that reason.

Welcome indeed Curt. Here a thread you may want to read if you have not so far http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18901
Some good tips on keeping the Big Girls seat to the sky...
I bought a 2006 last November and the more I ride it the better I like it. It does take some getting used to. Like the salesman kept telling me this bike is different from the Road King you been riding. Warts and all it is the best MC I have ever been on.

Curt:
Welcome to the family. You're gonna love the LT. One other important point: whenever you use the side stand make sure you leave the bike in first gear. The LT sidestand doesn't lock like the Harley and if it rolls forward it will roll off the stand. Many of us leave the in first and use the sidestand to shut the bike off whenever we park it.
Also, if you have the stock windshield, use only soap and water to clean it. Some products can cause delamination of the coating on the windshield.
As others have said, there is a wealth of information on this site. Take the time to browse around and you'll be offering advice before you know it.

Wow! Thanks to you all! Honestly, I wasn't sure what kind of response I would get but surely didn't expect the warm welcome you have all offered!
Deedub,
I found the website that has a repair/maintenance manual available in .pdf format; thanks for the offer. If I need a lifeline, I'll contact you.
I'm looking forward to a 2-hour ride this weekend; will build-up to longer in preparation for a trip to Ft. Campbell, KY. My #2 son is stationed there.
Ride safe,
Curt

The LT sidestand doesn't lock like the Harley and if it rolls forward it will roll off the stand. Many of us leave the in first and use the sidestand to shut the bike off whenever we park it.Also, if you're parking the bike facing downhill, 1st gear and let it roll foward until it hits compression on the engine. If you don't, you could come back and find it on its side. DAMHIK.
Welcome to the site. Just as a suggestion, there is a ton of information in the Hall of Wisdom, HoW, and the FAQs. But you'll also find your answer here too, ya just gotta learn how to get the search function to work. Ask away, most of us will give ya a helping hand. But just don't ask about oil or tires. ;) :)
The lunatics are in charge, so enjoy the assylum. :D

Picked the new ('99) bike up last night; about a 2 hour ride from Dallas to Waco and the time flew by!
What a great bike! I'm looking forward to a longer trip; can't wait!
