Not meaning to fuel any flames of discontent, but wonder if anyone else has heard of this?

There's a rumor going around that talks about an entirely new version of the 'mapping software' for the slant/4. Version 8.x. The rumor implies that the new(er) version increases HP/torque and as a result [BMW] can change the xmission gearing, etc. to eliminate the 1-2-3 clunk. And, that this version 8.x may not be able to be retrofitted or, it will be a billable upgrade.

There's a rumor going around that talks about an entirely new version of the 'mapping software' for the slant/4. Version 8.x. And, that this version 8.x may not be able to be retrofitted or, it will be a billable upgrade. At this point it remains a rumor. It may be possible that a new CIP update is in the works, though it has not been discussed within BMW in the US as far as I have heard. Most of the rumors of new updates begin in Europe. I sincerely doubt it would offer much more horsepower, at least not enough to allow a substantial change in gearing. The 1-2-3 clunk is widely attributed to the internal tolerances rather than the actual gear ratios.

BMW Motorrad USA currently has a policy of not reimbursing dealers for CIP version updates. It is up to the dealer to cover it or to charge the customer. The dealer I use charges me about 1/2 hour to do the update and I have no problem with the bill. With the latest 7.1 update I am completely satisfied with the way my two K1200S and one K1200GT run. While there was some marginal improvement with each update, I was not unhappy with the earliest software on my 2005 k1200S (V5.x). The latest (7.1) has the three bikes running about as well as I could possibly expect

There are unconfirmed rumors of a new transmission cassette that reduces the clunking in lower gears.
