There are so many disclaimers about warranty and serial numbers removed that one has to wonder if it is viable to buy a Passport radar detector on eBay.
Anyone with good or bad experience to share?
I am looking at the 8500 X50 Red.
I saw them going for around $220 + on eBay, $305 at Best Buys, and (interestingly enough) $299.99 on the official escortradar.com web site.

You have to buy from a authorized dealer to have a valid warranty. If the seller lists themselves as an authorized reseller you should have no warranty problems. I bought mine here: http://www.motorcycleradar.com/products.htm

I use it with the H.A.R.D. LED , a great combo.

Ditto on the H.A.R.D. system from Legal Speeding.

Bought one unit from on the web from an authorized dealer. Had a water issue with the display and was able to get it repaired under warranty.

The e-bay unit I bought at a lower price didn't have the serial number tag, which raises questions in my mind that I can't get answers to. No problems with it over that last year.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy one used from a place like this board, where the seller has a rep. Otherwise I'd pay a bit more and get a new one. There is a high level of reliance on the effectiveness of these units and if the pedigree is suspect then confidence goes way down.

Don't use the suction cups on your windscreen. The detector will mark the clear plastic as it vibrates. There are two contact points on the top edge of the detector that do the damage.

Giles, with the X50 you will also have to get Escorts ground loop isolator to connect it to your intercom.
