It was 24 again this morning on the ride into work - I rode the S in, I refuse to give in.
Just read that the Valley citrus growers expect to lose up to 75% of the crop this year. Get read to pay big time if you like oranges or grapefruit.

That's depressing....One of the things I have been looking forward to is someday retiring and moving to 'south Texas' - eveidentally, that is further south than Boerne...
At least our ice is on the ground and not on the trees/wires/etc...

The good thang is that it doesn't happen often, nor does it stay long. It does paralyze the region as far as traffic and business. That should tell you it doesn't happen enough to be absolutely prepared.
At least some of the steenkeen bugs will get offed.

I'll take snow over ice any day!Very true. But what happens up here is...we'll get a little warming spell and the snow will start to melt, then that night when it drops below freezing, things get real interesting!

Yep, I know how y'all feel. Two days ago, I was seriously considering flying home and retrieving my bike. Last night, it was clear and cold. Today, I woke up to this: :(

Like Ken said earlier, here is what we woke up to in Hillsboro this morning. But, they say it will warm up and start to melt off later today. Of course we have the freezing temps overnight, and watch the ice that will form for the commute tomorrow!
They have just put out the word that chains are required on all highways and freeways within the Portland Metro area! I believe that is a first!
The problem has not been the snow, but rather, the light layer of ice beneath the snow. And that has sent a bunch of vehicles sliding into others up here!
Bottom line is we got about 3" dumped on us within just a few hours this morning as you can see in the pic of my patio table (yeah, I know, not covered! My bad.). Before sunrise this morning all we had was the typical frost.
Snow Day for most of us. Woo Hoo!!

Wow!! Five years ago I Moved to south Florida from very cold NY. I've needless to say , love that I now ride in comfort all year comlaining of the heat sometimes. With the recent hurricanes the insurance and taxes are 6 times what I paid in NY. So the wife and I considered our next move if things keep going thru the roof down here and NC,GA, TX were on the list but those pictures are giving me chills and bad flashbacks!!! It was 82 today and I rode half the day! I'm sending the wife back to work to pay the insurance I'm staying!!! Hang in there guys! :bmw:

We're losing big limbs off our oaks now. Just too much ice.
Come summer, we'll probably have another one of those 100+ days for months just to even this out.

The ice even hit my area. Man, it's really pretty. It's not gonna freeze any more this week so it'll clear up by the evening. We lost power last night while my wife was watching American Idol. She could live without heat or hot water but not her TV show. It came back on after a bit over one hour and then we lost it again this morning for 1 1/2 hours. All electric house is not alwayse a good thing.

Yup - losing limbs and trees here too. Lost the really nice one in front of the house and the only other one we have looks close to toast too!!! Major cleanup of the first one, when it finally thaws enough so's I can pull the big stuff away from the house. Gonna call insurance dudes and check on coverage for ice damage. Seems I recall there might be some (fingers crossed).
Standing seam metal roofs in the 'hood are shedding ice floes just like glaciers that calve. Loud cracking sounds and sliding panes of ice prolly 10-12' wide hitting the ground, then pulverizing the bushes and plants.
And Cheryl wants to retire up north somewhere. Already told her I'll visit coupla times a year --- in the summer!!! ;)
Edit: follow up. Doug, and anyone in the ice storm area; contact your insurance carrier if you've had tree loss. We called - sure enuf, with some limitations such as a percentage of dwelling amount carried, less deductibles, etc. They advised to NOT begin demolition of tree until adjuster visits, unless there is possiblity of life and limb (punny, huh?) injury to passersby, or is a hazard to others.

Wow. never even thought about calling the insurance folks. I guess all they could say is no....and laugh.
EDIT: I just called my agent. No dice. Only if the tree does some damage, ie, house, car, person, etc. I'm on my own to clean it all up. 6 oaks and maybe 2 or 3 cedars to clean up.

Hey, good news! With the ice on my roof it isn't leaking anymore... for now.
Back in LA we had some real nice oak trees... a good 3-4 foot in diameter trunks. When "ice" hit us back in the '60's my Pop went out and put some 2x12's for support under them.. had the boards notched to keep stuck to limb. The more "vertical" limbs we couldn't do anything about....

We just drove into town, had to get to the mailbox store and Chinese food!!! My truck was one, solid sheet of ice. It finally started to thaw coming home and throwing big sheets.
You walk outside and hear all kinds of loud cracks from tree's. I haven't lost too many limbs..... yet.
No newspapers today and the thang about sleet, ice and dark of night is a myth... no mail.
Satellite tv is still down, dish iced over. Good thang I hate tv, but like Bone's wife, Sandar the mag is lamenting Idol. Now, if they did it topless.....
The biggest joy is think how many bug's are getting offed. No web worms off the oak tree's this season!

A few years ago I had a tree blow down in my back yard from an overnight thunderstorm that took out my fence. It seems like the insurance company gave me $250 to remove the tree since it had taken out a covered item (the fence). They wouldn't have covered anything if it had just blown down.
I drove around my neighborhood in North Austin a little while ago. I saw 2-3 trees with major branches down. It looked like there would have been a lot more damage if the freezing rain had continued much longer.
I'm going to have to call the insurance company as my roof has started to leak now too. I had just commented to Channing as how my roof needed to be replaced after the hail storm but that I was going to wait because it wasn't leaking.

Trying to get out of my driveway was real interesting, a tad above idle in 4 wheel drive and she crunched out kinda squemish like. My street was the same way, but the rest of them had traction. The low water crossing was iced over nice and thick, but there was a slushy set of tracks cut thru.
I don't think I can get the bike out, I really don't. How do them northern boys do it?

oooo. That poor tree took a pounding! It was really weird this morning. It was so still and quiet. Just standing in the yard I could hear trees cracking all over the neighborhood. Kinda eerie.
I got out a while ago and found the ice scrapper I've had since '72 and started chipping the 1/2" sheet of ice off the truck since that'll be what I take IF I get to go to work tomorrow since my Jeep is surrounded by downed trees.
Looks like a big chunk of my riding season is going to be eaten up tree removal and trimming. DAMN THIS ICE!!!

Here's why the oak tree's are falling down. Amazing the amount of ice builds up on the leaves and branches.
