I could not find this issue in the threads discussing the MP3 player feature of the later Garmin units (like the 2730, 2820 or the Zumo that I received yesterday).

The Zumo manual states that only MP3 files are supported. My iTunes library contains a mix of songs that I ripped from previously purchased CDs, podcasts downloaded from iTunes in MP3 format, and songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store.

I copied two sample songs into the Garmin from my computer. The MP3 podcast works fine but it won't play the song I purchased from the Music Store.

I thought I recalled that iTunes allowed you to convert files to different formats, which is true, except for purchased songs which are in a "protected" AAC format that cannot be changed. I guess that is to prevent bootlegging. I have paid for every bit of music that I have downloaded but I sure would like to be able to put my songs on my Garmin.

Anyone know a work-around, other than buying music on CDs again?

Burn the songs you purchased to an Audio CD and then re-rip them back into iTunes as MP3.

Jeffe, I tried your suggestion and it appears to have worked. It takes a little time but I only have a 2G memory card anyway. Thanks!

Graham, the software might make the whole operation easier as well.

What a wealth of knowledge on this site.
