What is YOUR best time on the Dragon?

I never checked mine but some guys on another forum are quoting theirs...so I was sorta wondering how they compare with some of the riders here...

I'll be amazed if anyone on this forum has timed themselves doing the Dragon. And besides, where's the starting line? Finishing line? Both ways, or one way? North then South, or South then North? The variables go on and on...

But after all your ranting on squids and the way some people ride and/or drive, I'm quite shocked that you would start this thread. It's actually quite humorous. :)

My best time is in the fall, when the leaves are often on the road. Acorns in many corners add a quick shower to up the pucker factor. :D

My best time on the Dragon was the first time I was on the Dragon. It was pouring rain and I had just left Deals Gap where there was many a "poser" crying about about the rain.
Not a vehicle on the road as I made my way along the nicely banked smooth asphalt. I pulled in to the over look near the other end and gazed down at the mist on the water below. Thought to myself this is sure a pretty place in the rain, pity many riders will never see that.

Soooo...I take it that no one on this board has timed their ride through the Dragon?I rode it once, but didn't time it. What's the use of doing that -- bragging rights? I'm not sure why one would do that but I'm willing to learn.

Interesting but predictable for BMW riders.To quote Johnny Five: "Need more input." Not following you here. I've seen more hyper-analytical types on this site than elsewhere (that's a good thing...). They can tell you min/max/avg speed, travel time, stop time, pee time, and any other stats for a cross-country trip.

Besides, I am working on a project that will mean nothing to most folks.I'll bite. It would mean more to most folks if you would share some details. Apologies in advance if I should already know what you're referring to.

I have not timed any of my rides on the Tail of the Dragon and don't intend to. The road doesn't have safe runoff areas to accomodate fast riding as the "parts tree" at the m/c resort proves. I think it is fun to allow enougn distance in front to set up for turns and establish a rhythm. It's also good practice!

As some of you may know, I do a lot of research, sometimes for my work, sometimes for my own personal knowledge. Since I "retired" (read quit) from teaching at Georgia Tech...I now have time to research a large number of topics only of interest to me.

So far, BMW riders, in general, tend to enjoy THE RIDE. Timing is not important. However, for other riders/drivers, I have received instant responses about riding times, not THE RIDE.

Once I get enough data together, I may be able to generate an opinion based on trends. Like I said, just interesting to me.... :D

No that assumption would be wrong, I have timed it and filmed it,many times but would have to dig out the video's
because they have the timer.
At this point in my riding life, I would not want to post up numbers that may cause others to harm themselves trying to match or achieve. The dis-claimers they used to use with some of my articles was pretty long, for just such reasons!

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of "the Dragon" I think it's over rated,
I'm not a "racer" and don't care nothing about being one,
I just wanna ride a safely as possible (I know, my age is showing)
I don't like being passed on the right or the inside on a curve with oncoming traffic by some testosterone driven egotist or the inexperienced rider that is trying to keep up with him,
as neither of them have any regard for my safety.
I think that most of what goes on there gives motorcycles in general "a bad name"
So I don't go there anymore.

When Hawg posted this, I thought to myself "how stupid is that"
and it kinda suprised me as I usually like most everything coming from his keyboard.

Now I understand where you were going with this and yes, you had us "going" :)

Edit: As soon as I posted this I saw Rock's post above this,
our opinions couldn't get more "apart"
But then I don't think Rock could be considered an "average BMW rider" :)

Bit sad to quote myself, but here goes . . .

The Dragon is world famous, even in the UK, but from all the pics & vids I've seen, it just looks like a nice twisty country road. The Lysebotn road - (34 hairpins, a 350deg tunnel(with a helluva drop(decrease in altitude) in it)) is challenging, (and single track). IMVHO, its far better (fun) than most Alpine passes. - What is the Dragon really like ??

My best time is every time I ride it! - Along with the Blue Ridge/Skyline Dr. and Smoky Twist/Cherokee Res. and through Irwin, Tn.

To me it is two different rides altogether. The Dragon does not have the change in altitude that the Lysebotn Road. I like the Dragon from the technical aspect. When I can ever ride it correctly then I'll be satisfied. The road of which you speak also looks like a blast. Who knows maybe one day I'll do a Ari thing and ship the bike overseas for a long European vacation.

I did Tabcat Bridge to Deals Gap on my R90S in 9 minutes and 30 sec. (approx.)

The R90S is not seriously modified, just a few alterations, not nearly so much altered as are my calculations. ;)
