View Full Version : Rack for GT Large Topcase

For some of us touring represents the essence of our riding and like many, I usually take more than I need. It's usually the light stuff that I pack on the rack of my LT, likewise [now] on the GT. The rack is a Harley Davidson part, is well made, and takes no special talent other than being careful lining up the holes. The template is useless. Any questions, PM me, but it's straight forward. I think the spacers provided by HD will be enough to raise the front of the rack above the cushioned pillion pad. However, I had some rubber spacer that I used.

The above only to show the HD part number.

Here's a top view showing the spacers and the overall fit.

You are correct Joe, chrome sucks. Maybe I can dip it in the Plasti-Dip?http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

Get is sprayed with Line-X bed liner. That should get it just about utilitarian enough. :D

i have spoken at length with john about this... and i would like another material as well.... however, i'm fairly sure that H-D would never make this in any other material... please correct me if i am wrong
i do think it'll be very useful... especially for long distance 2-up touring.... which is something that i do with my wife, Carol on occasion...
there was ALWAYS a bag tied on top of my LT rack whenever we were on the road

Powder coat.
Powder coating would be awesome. Jokingly, Joe, Messenger 13 introduced me to Plasti-Dip, but I'd need a gallon etc. and unless professionally done, could be a disaster.
I may try to chase a powder coater, not sure if there's one locally as the bulk of them cater to the automotive industry, but fogging chrome, yechhhh, indeed.
The LT in my garage WAS the only cycle with chrome; now, the GT's rack being chrome, well, fogging and all of the bad aspects of chrome. Most probably know this but temp/humidity changes affecting fogging on chrome can be averted with a fan. Yup, I have an oscillating fan going in the 'toy' garage. GMAB!

Guess I can hijack my own thread.
I stayed up until the 3rd quarter and reluctantly threw the towel in. 41-14 was more grief than I could bear, plus was falling asleep during ND possessions with alternating moments of adrenaline rushes; not enough to overcome the sleep tho'.
If you ever decide to do it let me know so I can send you some stuff that make the install a lot easier. e.g. aligning the rack on the topcase without proper 'pads' will scratch the hell out of it. etc.
On and upward to Ohio State, Florida? Depending on mood, don't know whom I will root for as both Urban and Jim are in my 'don't love' sights! (but then again, I don't like Pete Carrol, Lloyd Carr, OR Les Miles, etc).http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gifhttp://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gifhttp://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

i would have called you.....
fell asleep in the 3rd quarter when it became obvious that the LSU lockeroom at halftime was a more productive venue than that of ND
sorry for the loss
great first half
ugly in the end
not a florida fan
but.... hate ohio state.... went to U Miami as you remember
so...
i'll still root for OSU.... don't want to "hear" the Gator nation for the next year

My GT manual says don't go over 112 MPH with the large top case on the GT. Hang some crap on that KA-Rome HD thingy and maybe your top speed should drop to maybe .....111?
Looks OK standing still, but not my idea of a practical aerodynamic addition for a GT. To own his each.
Read recently where a rider going to FL died when his bungee-cord (sp?) attached jacket came loose at speed and got in the rear wheel. His riding buddies had to call the wife. Sad.
Be safe out there with high mounted objects in the wind stream. I was working the 24 Hour Le Mans race in France when the Mercedes car flew up in the air and over the fence! Speed is great, but aero stability is tough to predict. Mercedes withdrew both cars that year. Ouch! Expensive and embarassing.
Schnitzer M3 front lip shot attached. Note stability braces are an interesting example of supporting wide structures that deform significantly during high speed runs. Deformation induces unexpected loads that can impact stability and TRICK drivers/riders. Ergo, the flying Mercedes cars at Le Mans.
Be safe out there.:thumb:

Never get up to those speeds when touring with the junk. I'm having it powder-coated dark gray/clearcoat to match the bottom of the topcase. Will only put light stuff on top e.g. clothes, most likely. But, this is the way I would prefer to ride the GT most of the timehttp://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif !

Bike looks REALLY sweet, especially the black wheels.:thumb: Remus worth the cash? I like hearing the iPod, so I'm hesitant to do the Remus. I'm trying to get KTM to do ORANGE wheels on the 2007 Super Duke as an option.

Not sure I test the limits of the Remus, but the sound is awesome; dropped allegedly 12+ lbs, I think. I use a set of Etymotic er6i headset/earphones inside my helmet...blocks out everything and the XM radio or iPod awesome.
Thanks for the nice words!

That's darn near a bowling ball of weight reduction.....might follow your lead.....

If I had to do it over I would get the full Remus system. Why, don't know other than it's out there. No negatives on my part but I have the full Remus on my R12GS and love it also.
If you are going to the MOA rally you may want to wait. Can't remember the name, maybe Maximoto, Remus' installer her in USA is usually at the rally and there's a worthwhile discount and a fixed install price. Might add up to a couple hundred bucks?

Bah! I've already tested the topbox to almost 150...no worries. :D
Thanks Joe! You solved a major concern for me.
Now, you're not going to believe this, BUT, the only reason I haven't bought the large case is I wasn't sure about the stability above 150!
