Hi, all:

Elton Marks posted here on Dec. 27th a review of the new Garmin Zumo. His thread, together with the replies, seems to indicate that the receiver is convenient for a casual motorcyclist about-town, but lacks in features useful for the long-distance rider.

Couple of weeks later, some of you may have had a chance to play with these receivers as well. (Was Santa nice to you?)

I am curious what is the current opinion here. Useful? Toy? Stick with the 2xxx series?

I have been considering the Zumo to be able to carry it both on the 'LT and some smaller machines I have. I find my LT-mounted 2610 too big/conspicuous on these, yet I would like to phase out the GPS V that is mounted on my 'RS and on the dual-sports.

Thanks!

Hi Robert,
I still waiting for Garmin response on my email, and I would think it's normal. I sent the e-mail on 27 and they were already closed for the holidays, so I will wait until Friday for a response before call they in.

The Zumo still on the jury for me. I didn't discard it, nor accept it.
I would like to ear from Garmin first, and then take another trip before finalize my review but I would not say it's not good for long rides. It is. But maybe the 2xxx series are better, for the same (less) money.

I will go back to it on that thread as soon as I had Garmin response.

Thank you for reading.

I received my Zumo about a week ago. It's my first GPS so I don't have a frame of reference. It's all new to me but so far I'm enjoying my Zumo very much.

I had been planning for about two years to buy a StreetPilot. In fact, I went ahead and bought a Garmin cradle and power cord when I bought my BMR shelf. Been riding around with a mount but no GPS. Garmin kept bringing out new units with more features. The 2730 (I wanted XM radio) was a front runner, but then I thought the Bluetooth might be something worth having in years to come. That pretty much meant the 2820 or the Zumo. Ended up choosing the Zumo.

I like the size and shape of the Zumo; it looks very "clean" and compact on the bike. I like the removable SD memory card. I like the way they give you bike and car cradles with the Zumo.

I've read some of the criticisms leveled by "power users" but the shortcomings I have seen described are not features I miss (so far).

I've spent a little time looking at the MapSource (route planning) software that I loaded on my PC. The Zumo is easy to figure out; MapSource will take a little more time for me to decipher. I wonder if there is a "MapSource for Dummies" available?
