View Full Version : What Do You Think About This?

The GT forum on the LT site is probably the only place I will not (hopefully) get nuked on this idea. The product still in the plastic, so not perfect to see, but wonder what you think of this? I haven't done it yet, obviously:

Here's another shot:
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/119882248-M.jpg
The product is from HD and is nicely made. It will need a 1/4 inch spacer (furnished) to fit, but I think will look good. My rationale is, hell, if you are gonna have the monster topcase, why not a rack.

If they give you too much grief, I'd definitely do it.. I'm hoping to do this to Misty in the future... just don't like the idea of drilling thru the speaker mounts on the LT... so would probably create a bracket for the front mounts.

Padre Pio, not many know of this simple man!
Was a bit confused, I presume you are talking about the rack for the LT. I think you may know (perhaps not) this is the topcase on the GT. Heck, let the dealer do it for you on the LT, wire it up etc.
Maybe I'm confused.

Hey John,
When you figure out all the pieces needed for the install, please let me know. I've been looking at doing the same thing.
I'd like to find something with a LED bar on it, but wiring it up through the topcase and creating a clean quick-disconnect has been the only thing keeping me from doing it.

I googled 'helmet brake light' and got this (http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/riderlight/) as a start. There are several folks making similar units. Don't know why somethang along these lines couldn't be adapted to fit the GT or LT or?? (I don't know from nuttin' about the Canbus stuff, so apologies if these thangs aren't compatible).

I am not sure what you are going to put up there. But it would have to be light and small in size. The GT is a lot lighter and therefore less forgivin on added weight so far aft. The GT seems light in the front end to me already.

Hi Dick,
Pretty damn neat! Happy New Year!

Not much Brian, hell, maybe just some light clothes, rain suit, the stuff that you can roll but don't always, and it fluffs up etc. I have one for my LT and usually it's stuffed with microfiber rags, rain suit, etc. nothing heavy!

I think the LT one would fit, I think. But, will have to go to dealer to try it out. Powerlet's tankbag power kit would do it pretty easily, but not sure I want to go thru the effort. As I said earlier, just want the ABILITY to put stuff there. I personally would like the light bar, and love the rack on my LT. May call BMW Chitown and see how much the rack is.

I put one of those racks on the LT. I took a 12" LED lightbar from Signal Dynamics and clamped it to the back right under the rack. It had running lights and brake. Worked good.
El Jeffe, it will be three wires. A small Molex plug will work poifect for the disconnect.

john,
how will you REMOVE the top part of the PADDING of that large top box...?
or..... how will it be installed?
i LOVE this idea
we've talked about it before and i really want this on my bike
i miss it from my LT
but....
i'm wondering about:
1. the material
2. the color of that material
i'd like mind darker
graphite, black
is that possible?
great work, my friend...... as always

Padre Pio's in my sig line...
Yessir, I understand this is the topcase with a HD "tourpack" rack. There is a kit for the mounting of this type rack to the LT. That "kit" I speak of can be purchased here.. http://www.sayegh.org/bmw/rack.htm
You can look at the pics on that link... The two front mounts go through the padded areas over the rear speaker enclosures. That is something I don't care for... I would like to mount where the front would be over the painted area.

Greg, the padding doesn't have to be removed. The two rear posts are flush, while the two forward posts are about 3/16's high (short). If I can find some chrome/aluminum (polished of course) spacers that look professional, that will do the trick. There's a Marine West and a pretty good hardware store that stocks lots of marine/stainless hardware. Will take a looksee for something. Some black, high-gloss plastic spacers would do the trick also. I just don't want it to look homemade! Also, am going to take a look and see if the LT rack could do the job. That would be slick as heck as I have some cases for the LT rack that go one very well, into the rack tabs/slots, etc.

john
i'm quite intrigued
.......
we are in agreement (of course) about it not looking homemade....
and i think that the MATAERIAL OF CHOICE will be very very important
shiny, HD or marine-appearing stainless steel will look out-of-place on our high-tech GTs
perhaps i'm wrong about that
what do YOU think?

I talked to Paul about three months ago trying to convince him to make a rack fror the GT. I think if I could get his attention again, may call him on Tues. to see if he's pursued it. He wasn't sure of the success of the GT but he should be now!
Thanks

I just want it to match the legs/feet of the rack, nothing gaudy, of course. Just cuz my name ends in a vowel do you think that my home is decorated with waterboy fountains and velvets and gold brocade(s)?http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

I don't want a rack on the top of the topbox...but I'm sure going to look into wireless LED systems. Thanks Dick! The back of the GT is definitely in need of some additional lighting. Especially when the topbox is installed. I don't think that wireless units will be an issue for the GT's CANbus system. These units appear to work off the 1157 brake lamp...and I'm betting that they only require a very small amount of juice to operate. Well within the GT's brake light parameters. Some experimentation will prove either way, I suppose.

Joe... I didn't know anyone ever saw the brake light in the rear of your bike...except as it is disappearing over the horizon...You must've overheard the conversation at the DQ as I said "Goodbye" to my riding mates Friday evening. ;) Twenty miles earlier, I dropped the GT into 4th and took off. I think the 2 LT'ers looked down to see if their LTs somehow slipped into Reverse.

Joe, perhaps they need to have the LT's clutches serviced...?
During your visit to Texas I'll let you demonstrate that phenomenon..I'm sure it will be impressive, especially as I'm going to see that happen a lot...

I told Lisa just yesterday that after you took the lead on 212 you set a reasonable pace (defined as one that I was able to keep up with!). :o No doubt you can blow my doors off whenever you like, but I'll keep doing what they told me in the MSF BRC: ride your own ride. :)
I will agree, however, that the GT tail light needs lots of help. Not much light there, compared to the LT. Some LED running lights and/or brake lights would be a nice improvement. Maybe some reflective tape... your name spelled out in LEDs... a flashing strobe light...

Hey Howard, one of the LT guys here in Jax has one of those programmable 'moving strip' type signs on his back. Looks cool, but kind of small. I would think it encourages a car to crawl up your butt to read the thing. And, it it's an offensive msg, well, who knows!http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
