Hi there, visit Edinburgh - take her shopping, (to get her on side), then Glasgow (fairly close), then up Loch Lomond, and up the West Coast - up to Ballaghulish, Oban, Fort William then find your own way back - through the middle or down the East Coast. If u're coming into Newcastle, let me know, and we'll meet up with you, and get you up to Edinburgh at least.

If you are going during July and August take plenty of midge and mosquito repellants.

I forgot that bit - apart from Finland, bits of Sweden, and certain parts of NW Canada, Scotland has the worlds best killer midges

I've imagined that you folks outside the US often wonder at some of the American slang that shows up on this board. So let me turn the tables: what's a "midge" ???

a midge is a small little fly, similar to a mozzy (mosquito) but much smaller - it doesn't cary any nasty deseases like malaria, but it's bite leaves a red weal with a crusty top (ok, tooo much info) - swampy/lake (y) areas in the countries I mentioned are full of them.

Early July is good as the English schools have not stopped for the Summer holidays, Scottish schools stop end of June.
If you are doing Loch Lomond / West Coast then you pass my door and if things go to plan I will be able to provide accomodation as well as food and drink.
I would reccomend going through Glencoe to Fort William then head for Applecross. From there you can head further north or to Inverness then head south again. How long do you have?
PM me if you want any more info.

If you've ever met a midge, you wouldn't soon forget it. We once pulled into an overlook near a postcard perfect Scottish Loch. By the time we got off the bike and grabbed the camera we were covered in midges, head to toe. Fortunately we hadn't yet taken off our helmets, so we just flipped down the lids and face shields, grabbed our pic, and hustled out of there. They are incredibly persistent and swarm in clouds so thick you can hardly see through them, but they aren't nearly as fast as an LT. :)

One of the nicest places I've ever been to is Oban. Really pretty little seaside community, and from there you can take the ferry over to Isle of Mull and Iona, which is where St. Columba came to, bringing Christianity to Scotland in 563 or so. If you like to hike and fish etc. Mull is a really cool place, if you're only there for the riding, you'll probably not want to go as there aren't many roads - I wish I could have spent more time there hiking myself, it's very beautiful there.
If you are into it, there's a Campbell castle near Oban which is still there and run by the descendants of the Campbell Clan, which is now operated as a B&B. ("The Black castle")
Isle of Skye is pretty, but again is very sparsely populated and not a lot of riding, although the ride up there from Oban along the coast is AWESOME roads and you will really enjoy the trip and also from there over to Inverness - best riding in the country I bet. When you get to Invergarry you can stay at Glengarry "Castle" although it is really just a hotel and although it was comfortable, was not cozy. If I were to go back I would probably stay in B&B's instead. It's a good base to vist Loch Ness from and you can also fish for Salmon and Trout if you're inclined to.
Oh and one last thing, if you are going to see castles while you're there these are the ones I recommend: (in the order of priority to make sure you see them)
Edinburgh
Stirling Castle
Dunvegan
Eilean Donan Castle
Urquhart Castle
Castle Stalker
Hope you have a GREAT trip!

so the midges are tiny biting flies that travel in dense swarms? how do they compare to the gnat of the south usa? the gnats is a similar insect that have similar traits. we say that gnats are primarily composed of huge set of teeth in comparison to a very small body. omurphy from coastal ga usa.
