Don't let this happen to you! I was coming home from Arkansas, and made it to Grapevine on one tank of gas from Mena, AR, about 270 miles. It had been raining all day, and it was cold. I was deep into the red, so I decided to get gas before going home. I was sitting on my bike filling up, and was watching the pump numbers go by. I realized that the gas handle had not clicked off and gas was running over and down the overflow tube. Crap, I says. So I put the handle up, capped the tank, and looked down at the pavement to see a small puddle of gas underneath. I backed up a bit and started her up. Then the fun started. Flames burst out from both side of the lower fairing! I yelled to another motorist to run in and get the fire extinguisher, then backed further from the pump and got off. The guy ran out and started spraying. Flames came out of every hole for a bout a minute. Then it was out. The first thing I noticed was that the clutch handle was frozen. Who knows what the rest will be. I had her towed to BMW FW for triage. I should know this week what the damage will be, and I have filed a claim under my comprehensive coverage. On top of that, the rear main seal began leaking some time ago, and there is now oil on the clutch. So I guess I'll be riding Sweetpea's Sofia for a bit. :(
PS. Dick, don't fret. We are still coming to Houston!

Those auto clicker off'ers have always worked for me. I'll never trust one again, that's for sure. I think I'll let Sweetpea drive me down there in her Blazer... and maybe I'll wear my asbestos undies just in case! :p

I'm not a beeg advocate of the "who shit my pants thang", but I do think there might be a leetle culpability from the gas station. It wouldn't hurt to contact them or have a lawdog craft a finely worded missive.
Glad you be unscathed!

That'll get the pucker factor way up there real quick. Really sorry to hear about your LT. Maybe it's just time to get a new one. You know... when it's time, it's time!

WOW!!! What an exciting day. Is this a common thing? I have also had pumps not stop when full so I have gotten into the habit of filling the bike SLOW and watching.
I am not so quick to think so I would have jumped off the bike and ran!!! Camera in hand and watch the big boom.

Glad you weren't.. "singed".
Anyway, hope you're able to get through the Insurance Gauntlet quickly with "honest" benefit payment.

:eek:Rev,
I am very sorry to hear about your bike BBQ. What a shock it must have been. MOST importantly you were not injured.
I must say your timing is really quite good in view of the fact that all of the IMS shows will be bringing the best right to you.
After being without a bike for such a long time I truly do not recommend it.
Get out there and partake of some retail therapy. :D
Best to you and Sweetpea

I dunno. I'm still in shock! FW had a 2006 LT on the floor for 22k plus. Yikes. There are some slightly used 05's being offered for 18 or so. Then again, I could get something older and cheaper and save the big purchase for a 2008 next Gen. I have to wait to see what the adjuster offers me, too. Crap!

Munson, I'ssa sorry fer the loss. I wasn't piping in since you survived and I knew you'd be prospering, but totaled? Yikes, that's full of possibilities and trauma. Thank goodness you've got a good woman and a world full of roads to keep ya dreaming and flush.
On the other hand...If you repaint the Unigo to a lovely Titan Silver I'll take it off your hands, though it seems to me that you ought to be able to sell it to someone.

I know I can count on you, bro! I went back over today and removed some stuff that I can use on another bike, if I go that route. I sat on a new Connie at the Kawi shop today, and it sure was light! Or I might be like Edgar and go rent a HD for a day and see what that does for my TestyTosterone levels. :D
Of course I still have to dicker with the insurance company for the settlement. That ought to be funzy.
O, and Mr. Dragon has decided to Iron Butt his way to Grapevine to pick up his Uni-go. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for something bigger so I can carry camping gear, or maybe even one of them leetle house trailers.

Hope all is OK, at your house, too, bud. I got Jr. looking for me, so it won't be long. Kind of you to offer, but I'd be afraid to take a friend's bike to Houston, what with the crazy traffic and all. Much appreciated, though!

Glad you were not hurt in your attempt to audition for the Ringling Bros bike stunt show! Maybe a new Lt might be good for the soul. The important thing is you were not hurt. Bike can be replaced, you can't! Hope this works out to your satisfaction. Ride safe brother!

I got the check on Saturday, a little over 7k in the clear. I'm pretty pleased with that. I decided to go with a 2004 black beauty, custom, with the extra bling. Sweetpea says her name will be Ella. I say the lady is a tramp! :D
