Valentine One mounting issue

As far as I can tell, there is no real good place on any motorcycle to mount a V1. Except, maybe on top of your helmet. I guess I'm just going to slide the GPS to the left (on my BMA shelf), and put the V1 to the right of it. Sure it's a convenient spot, and it'll have a great view in front of the bike. But that also means that my body will be blocking a good part of what is going on behind me.

Valentine really needs to come out with a remote rear-view sensor. Don't ya think?

I had the Valentine on the right side of my GPS on my 02 LTE.
And I now on my 05 I have it on a right side mirror hole with a ram mount,
my only complaint is the corner of my right mirror is partially blocked.
The Valentine picks up signals from the rear consistently,
That little unit has saved me a lot of money.

I could, but it would be distracting and really look stupid because I would have to use a fairly long arm to get the V1 above the fairing of the GT. The handlebars are wider on the LT making that location much more doable.

Question: How poorly did the V1's rear-view capabilities suffer on your '02 mounted next to the GPS?

Joe, I've always shelf mounted my V-1, even on the GT, with no discernable problems. I prolly won't be able to tell if I get a laser hit from behind, but it wouldn't matter anyway.

I have a V-1 mounted on my sun visor of la trucka that is purdy much a clear shot front to back and it goes off in the same places that it does on the bike. You know, them weird spots that you'll get a K reading with amazing consistency. The all day, all the time K channel?

Your body will very effectivly block radar. If you mount it in front of you, the rear detection will be greatly attenuated.

I tested this when I was trying to find a good place on the LT. I went to a mall parking lot where I got a good Ka band signal from a door opener, and searched for a spot where the signal was just full strength with the detector looking at it with no blockage. I moved the detector all around the bike, in the top case, in the side cases, etc. I could lean in front of it and reduce the signal to 2-3 dots. I finally decided from testing that it needed to be to the right side as far as I could get it, but even then if the radar source is behind and to the left it is greatly blocked by the rider.

If it is in front of you, you need it as far forward as possible to pick up radar behind and to one side well, but straight behind you will be weak.

He says the V1 relies on tight integration between the front and rear antennas, and that to achieve that with separate antennas would require prohibitively expensive Mil-spec components and technology.

I've talked to them about that, too. Some young dood who got a leetle snotty and said these detectors weren't made for moto's. Why do they offer a moto kit then?

What I did was mount the unit in the right side luggage compartment. Then installed a repeater display in the left dash area, and moved the headlight adjustment knob to the outside. Also, I wear an earbud, and plug this into a phone plug behind the drivers seat. Gotta hear the alarm more than anything.

Of course this picks up front and back radar nicely, but does not do the laser. Doesn't matter, as with laser, it is too late once you are hit. That is why I have a custom laser jammer installation.

I can supply pictures if interested. Never had a speeding ticket yet in four years of speeding recklessly.
