If BMW has an award an accident on a new motorcycle closest to a dealer, I might win. I got to put less than ¼ mile on the new R1200GS when…
“I was riding down the road when the other vehicle went through the stop sign, failing to yield to me, and caused the collision and my injuries.”
I’m waiting for the police report – I do not know if the other driver was male or female, was cited for a traffic violation, or has insurance.
I was wearing extensive motorcycle gear over my street cloths. The gear is the most impact and abrasion resistant IMO:
In addition to helmet and Kevlar reinforced gloves, I wore a Kevlar mesh pants and jacket (Cycleport brand). Under the jacket and pants, I wore a padded Gortex thermal layer. Additionally, over my torso I was wearing a fleece jacket, BMW armored back protector, and a BMW electric vest. All in all, there was about two inches of the most durable motorcycle apparel available. Also, I was wearing Vendramini Marathon Steel boots.
If not for ATGATT, I might not be here to contribute my two cents to the forum!
My right collarbone was broken and a rib on my middle back might be fractured In addition, I hurt from head to tow!

Glad to hear you walked away!
How bad was the GS damaged?
Now that the weather has gotten colder, I've been much more lax in my approach to ATGATT. In other words, I ain't got no cold weather ridning gear.
I hope Santa brings me some!
Here's to a quick recovery,

John, so sorry about your mishap. Your guardian angel was watching out for you and made sure you were properly geared up!;)
There will be another GS in your near future! And your broken bones and bruises will be a vague memory...:)
Glad you walked away from that one.
I almost forgot!!! Congrats on your award!!! :D You certainly earned it!!!

Thanks. The GS doesn't look that bad, but the dealer has yet to appraise the damage. Nevertheless, I'm going to insist on a new GS, and I'll add PIAA's before leaving the dealership!
Best wishes on present from Santa.
Glad to hear you walked away!

Now that I get a chance to pick another one, I wonder if it'll be a different color or even a GSA.:)

Don't depend on the police to compile an accurate report and/or file necessary charges against the other driver. Follow-up, follow-up, at the accident scene, even if you have to crawl over to make it happen !

Wow. Well, at least you'll have a memory and a story. Hope it all works out to your satisfaction, and quickly. It reminds me when I bought a new Ford Expedition seven years ago, driving it off the lot, and the "Check Engine" light came on about 1/4 mile from the dealership. They couldn't fix it and it had to stay. Came home in a loaner vehicle and told my wife/kids the new vehicle was in the shop getting fixed! Doesn't compare to your tale however.

I'm so glad to hear your relatively ok considering the possibilities.
Check with any businesses near by that may have external security cameras that can see the intersection, it may be on film.
Heal well!

Sorry to hear about your mis-adventure. What color was it, maybe the next one should be in floresent orange, but then they might think it is a target. Did they find the cage driver?

I saw a white GSA at the dealership the other day, looked very cool and visible. Get well soon, and Merry Christmas!

It's yellow, with all the factory options. As pretty as it'll probably be after repair (ballpark estimate is $8K damage), I want a new bike. This is the first new new bike since 1975. It's just won't be the same once it's repaired.

I'll one better you! I bought a brand new ranger in 99. When I got in the veh to drive off the lot, I noticed the check engine light on! I stayed on the lot and drove it right into service. It was a loose wire on the transmission.
Nice vehicle preparation, yes?! You'd figure they'd check a brand new veh for proper function! That's why I'll never buy another Ford again.

[color=black][font=Arial] ....I was riding down the road when the other vehicle went through the stop sign, failing to yield to me, and caused the collision and my injuries.....
From a MADD and collision investigators' standpoint, I think we should stop referring the these collisions as "accidents."
The M-W dictionary definition of an accident: 1 a : an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance b : lack of intention or necessity : CHANCE <met by accident rather than by design>
When someone eats a stop sign and hits someone else, there is nothing unplanned, unforeseen or unintentional about it! Unless you live in an area where you are the only vehicle on the road, the consequences of blowing a stop sign are a certainty.
There are multiple regular posters on this site. I hope we all can start using "collision" to refer to these type of events.

I'm going to say this to her insurance company and maybe mention the possibility of punitive damages for failing to obey the traffic law. From a MADD and collision investigators' standpoint, I think we should stop referring the these collisions as "accidents."

My right collarbone was broken and a rib on my middle back might be fractured In addition, I hurt from head to tow! It's been 2-1/2 weeks since the crash. The Albuquerque police could not cite the driver for failing to stop because they must witness the offense. The driver only submitted the claim to her insurance company after I called and pressured her to take care of it. Of course she claims "I'm a very safe driver, I looked both ways before pulling out (in front of me)." "I didn't see you."
Interesting that she claims to have looked both ways (I was on a one-way street). She was probably looking the other way as she pulled out. No wonder she didn't see me!

I agree.
Of note is that the State of Texas recently adopted the term "crash" instead of "accident," and changed the state reporting forms and guide booklets to reflect this.
The street officers (and dispatchers, uh, er communicators), though, still typically refer to them as MVAs (Motor Vehicle Accidents).

It's a federal initiative to change the term to "crash". They feel that calling it an "accident" implies that "these things are bound to happen, and it may be no one's fault." NJ started to change it about 5 or 6 years ago, and as of now, just about no one yet calls it a crash.

Makes sense that the feds are involved. What's next, they start pointing out how the number of "accidents" has dropped? :)

Thanks for the reminder to wear protective gear. Yours obviously helped save you from much more serious injuries. Hope you get well soon.
