My BMW Service Manual notes a pretty specific grease for the front axle and bearing cage - Shell Retinax EP-2. Where I live it appears finding this specific item comes just after finding the Wizard of Oz. Anybody have good recommendations for a comparable product that will do the job. Many thanks.

I use Mobile 1 synthetic general purpose grease.
Find it at most any auto parts type place.

Whatever is in the grease gun will be just fine! Not if it is not "waterproof" grease. http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/images/smilies/headshake.gif No sir! Ever see grease turn to a white powder and seize an axle real nice and tight? That's from someone using any old grease in the tube.

When I can't find the wizard, I just watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. :rotf:

The grease on the axle is not for lubrication, but for corrosion control. Any good, sticky, waterproof grease should do. It's main purpose is to prevent any type of corrosion which would cause the axle to stick inside the bearing bores.

As usual, thanks for the great feedback. I'm off to the auto parts store - it's just beyond Oz!
