My first GPS was a Garmin 2610. Used it for a year and a half and LOVED it. But during CCR last September, the screen failed on me. Bummer. But Garmin's customer service stepped up to the plate as usual and replaced it with the new & improved 2720. I love this one even more! It is simply fantastic! I don't leave home without it...no matter what I'm riding or driving.

Your first obstacle is to decide on the manufacture. You'll find that the majority in here prefer Garmin. (The BMW units are made by Garmin also.) But there are some Johnny-come-latelys that are pretty competitive.

Once you do decide on the manufacture, then you have to decide what other features you might want in a GPS. Touch screen? Built-in battery? XM or Sirius radio? BlueTooth? Weather? Text to Speech? Built-in .mp3 player? Screen size and orientation?

As you can see...the further you walk down this maze, the more confusing it gets. I highly recommend you buy a Garmin 27xx or 28xx unit. You just have to decide which one has the other bells and whistles that you need. My 2720 does everything I want and need out of a GPS unit.

Good luck to ya. You're gonna need it. :o

My Garmin 2620 has worked great for me for 3 years. On my last trip in Oct. the clear coating on the display started to peal (did not affect operation at all), called Garmin, they said send it in they would cover it. Sent it in, 5 days later received a new 2620. With a new unit it should be a while before I need to buy, but if I was I would be the Garmin ZUMO. With customer service like this it possitivly be a Garmin.

I have a BMW Mottorrad II on my LT - I love- even in Africa, it has baseline mapping. I used a 27xx last week on a bit of consultancy work , and (despite what Joe sez ;)) I think the 27xx has been 'dumbed down' a bit from the 26xx series. When I got my LT, back in june 2005, the sat nag should have been a £1300 option - (the Garmin 2620 was £1200 at the time, so not toooooo much of a BM markup), but it was included as a 'freebie'. One of my ride buddies who came down to the Saharah with me was well impressed by it. I emailed him a couple of month's ago, to let him know the price is now down to £245 - he bought one, and shortly after, the price for the 2620 is now £175. In mvho the 2620 is possibly the best sat nags going. (btw - all prices in Pounds Sterling - £1 = (about) $2)
