Just found the January edition on the magazine rack at the local book store.
This seemd like a really good magazine to me - based on 1 issue. Of course this one played right to my weakness - BBQ joints inTexas....:) Wonder how many I could hit next year in a week? ;)
Also looks like a good article on the Kingsville area as well...
So, for those that subscribe, is it worth the money, or did I just get lucky?

Worth the money, Shawn. Val and Miguel have been doin' this sorta stuff for at least 9 or 10 years and have really progressed to the top of their profession. I recall some of their earlier works were like 'mimeographed' - no color and no gloss. They're both good riders, and have a great following among the locals. Enjoy.

Thanks Dick!
I was sort of afraid that would be the answer - all I need is another magazine! I have sort of a magazine addiction/problem...

I'm with you, Shawn. Both on the magazine subscriptions and that last issue of Ride Texas, well, I was slobbering bibbless wanting some Q.
It's a good magazine, not on my top 5 list. Fact is, I was gonna let it lapse till the Q issue came out and immediately sent them a check. There's a couple of ol' boy's who write for them that I like, too. Bubba and I can't recall the other.

The Ride Texas guys got me to sign up for a subscription at the Ft. Worth MC show. Haven't seen the latest issue yet, but I'm hoping I like it as much my current favorite ... Road Runner.

I just renewed for three years. I like the mag and the writers are good at what they do.

If you could share some of their insight into BBQ joints, I am sure I would not be the only grateful one around here. Always looking for some good Q.

Sure Tony....
They had a nice 1 page writeup with several pictures of each of the following (the writeups were done by different folks)...
New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Barbecue, Huntsville
Southwest market, San Marcos
Bar E Bar-B-Que & Sausage City Market, Luling
Up-N-Smoke BBQ, Keller
The Country Tavern, W. of Kilgore
Seems like most of these sites have been in business quite a while, except for Up-N-Smoke, so they seem to have some 'character' to them.
New Zion started out as a way to feed workers at the church and grew into a fundraising business. The one in Luling doesn't have forks, so you eat with your fingers... Stuff like that on all of the above...
Pics of the food look great, but as you know, if you ca't smell the smoke, then it is hard to say... ;)
Others mentioned were Clark's Outpost BBQ, Tioga; Black's Barbecue, Lockhart; Inman's Ranch BBQ, Marble Falls; Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse, Dallas; Hard Eight, Stephenville; Bodacious Barbecue, Longview; Jones Family BBQ, Dennison; & Rileys BBQ, Dripping Springs.
They also mentioned Rib Crib in Tulsa - We have a Rib Crib here and it is more like chain and isn't that good (matter of fact, I won't go there - been there twice) - surely they meant something else. They also mentioned Bad Brad's BBQ in Pawhuska (OK) - I have been there and was not impressed at all...
I am sure there are hundreds of places left out - Coopers wasn't mentioned; I liked Goode Co. in Houston; etc...
Some interesting places - I may try to hit a few next year - after the thaw of course!
If you have some favorites, share - always looking for places to go - may not make it, but good to have a plan - right?

Thanks for the info, Shawn, I am getting hungry already.
I've been going to Sonny Bryan's for almost twenty five years, I used to work up the street from them when I first relocated to Dallas. When you get to finding them, don't be fooled by the franchised outlets bearing their name, I've never found one I like. The original is basically a shack not far from Dallas Love Field Airport. They are open from late morning until the food is gone. Seating is provided in the form of a bench with the old arm desks you may remember from school days. Packed at lunchtime, closed by dinnertime. Lots of character.
I go there whenever I am on that side of town.
I'll google the other places and add them to my list. Now that I have the LT I expect I'll be taking more full-day road trips; couldn't do that on my Harley (but she sure is pretty, and I expect I'll keep her for a long time). If you're in the area, look me up.

How can we list BBQ locations in Texas and not mention Cooper's in Llano? And when talking about Luling, how can we miss the Luling City Market?
These lists are rigged I say!
:)
I am going to have to try the County Tavern the next time I'm out in Kilgore.

It's a great magazine. I met Val and Miquel at the motorcycle show in 1999. Our TMRA booth was next to theirs. The magazine was named TEXMOTO at the time, and still have issue Vol I, No. 5 that was free. It has steadily improved over the years to a first class operation.

Thanks for the GPS file. I do use a Garmin on the bike. Now, if I can only figure out how to load the file. Maybe my 4 year old can show me ;)
TODAY's BBQ CONTEST: Name that BBQ Joint.
Was on a road trip a few years ago. Left out of San Antonio, rode generally north about ninety minutes or so. Stumbled onto a BBQ joint and market. Was a long building, like a strip mall, but it had a rustic(but modern) look to it. Went into the first room, and they had two big brick pits. You'd tell the guy what kind of meat and how much, and he'd pull it from the pit and slice off to fill your order. Took food to the next room, chairs and tables, to eat. Place was packed and the food was great. Sure would like to go back there.
I can picture it like it was yesterday, but can't say where it was or what the name was. CRS is in full swing.

North on I35? Did you have to get off the highway and cross under? Across from a nasty truck stop named Doc's with a buffet? If so, I think it's called Cowboy's.

No, we avoided the interstate and went primarily on two and two lane and four lane roads.

Meyers Elgin Sausage (http://www.meyerselginsausage.com/restaurant.html) in Elgin?

I don't think so. I didn't think we were that far east, so I asked my riding buddy on that trip. He wrote:
"That cant be the place, cause Elgin is east of Austin. We did not get over that way. We were West of Austin. Near Johnson City. I remember that we didn't go into Johnson city but were close to it. We headed north on 281 out of San Antonio, towards Johnson City. Then we turned west before getting there. The road we took West has the restaurant, but I am not sure which road west we took. I looked on the map, and see that it would have been either 290, or 1888 that we took west. I am not sure if it was 290 though, since that is right at Johnson City."
Well, at least we have a narrower geographic area to look at :)

Shawn - Many years ago, Bartlesville had a BBQ place called Dinkin's or something like that. It was pretty good and I ate there often when I was doing some consulting at PPCo. Is it still there?

Looking at the map, I wonder if it might be Grape Creek Country Market. Did a google, but web site is now a placeholder and the number listed on the various pages for them is disconnected.
Anyone know if they have gone Tango Uniform?

Yep, it's still here -- Dink's BBQ...
Actually pretty good - better than most in the area....
