New (to me) '83 R100RT - have questions

Hi, guys and gals
I finally got a boxer engined BMW to go with my '02 K1200LT. I've been wanting a boxer for a long time and I finally got one of BobsBMW project bikes.
Is a better sidestand available for this thing? How about a better centerstand? Is it possible to get a decent battery for the thing without spending an arm and a leg and your first newborn child?
This bike has a Saddleman Travelcade seat, but it seems to keep me a bit too far forward. Is a stock seat difficult to come by?

Bob Porecha in the UK used to do a replacement side stand. It bolts on in place of the left hand foot rest. It does not have a self-returning spring. (You have to put the stand up yourself.
I had three of them over the years as I couldn't reach to hold the original in place while I got off the bike.

The stands are great. They take the weight of the bike in the centre of the bike. Let me know if you want me to call him

All the products you're asking about were readily available years ago
you might get lucky and find them at a BWM swapmeet or possibly the flea market section of the MOA magazine or maybe E-bay
What you're looking for is a "Brown" sidestand, its longer and operates more like an HD stand
A Reynolds ride of stand (centerstand) is shorter than the stock one and keeps both wheels on the ground at all times, therefore it is easier to put the bike up on it and you can litterally sit on the bike and ride off with it.

The previous owner put a new BMW gel cell battery in my 1983 R80S (began life as an R80RT). Not quite exactly the right size, but works OK.

If you choose to look for a Reynolds ride-off center stand, be aware (as someone else posted) that both wheels stay on the ground. Makes it hard to spin the tire around when looking for the air valve. Also creates a BIG problem if you get a flat tire (you are using tubes in your snowflake cast wheels, aren't you?). I had a friend who carried a length of 2x4 with him to put under the Reynolds stand in case of a flat tire. I have a chrome Reynolds ride-off stand on my R80S - don't especially like it, but it looks cool.

Brown side stand if you can find one.......
The sure foot is fairly good but I had trouble with it being too close to the silencer and the spring would overheat and expand and drop the side stand while riding............................................

standard seat pans are available and can be recovered to match original by Rick Mayer

Westco gel battery fits just fine.......I don't remember the model number..........

The original valves and seats on the '83 are made for leaded gas, so if they haven't been changed to unleaded metalurgy, you'll need to keep a close eye on valve lash.......

Read and understand the $2000 o-ring as written by Airhead Beemer Club....
it deals with placement of the white o-ring and shim when changing oil filter...

Thanks, folks, I appreciate the responses. I'll be on the lookout for the Ride-Off stand and the Browns sidestand. I hadn't heard of the sidestand made by the guy in the UK but I'll try to find it.
